Hermanus - About the Neighbourhood

Sitting on the south coast, on the edge of Walker Bay, is the picturesque seaside town of Hermanus. Each year, visitors flock to this area to witness the arrival of Southern Right whales, which have earned the region the reputation as the best land-based whale-watching location in the world.

Hermanus also has one of the most diverse floral kingdoms in the world, offering incredible mountain paths, pristine beaches and secluded forests.

Cycle along meandering rivers and vineyards or hit the surrounding mountain biking tracks with stunning views over Hermanus and the Overstrand.

The beaches in the area are popular with surfers, kite-boarders, open-water swimmers and beachgoers. Spend an afternoon splashing in rock pools along the cliff paths or swimming in the lagoon.

There are plenty of hiking trails scattered around Hermanus. Explore the famous 12km Hermanus Cliff Path, wander through the nearby nature reserves, or head to Africa’s southernmost forest called Platbos, home to ancient tree specimens over 1,000 years old.

Golf lovers can tee off at one of South Africa’s most prestigious golf courses, characterised by breathtaking sea views and beautiful mountain vistas.

Join fellow twitchers and discover why Hermanus and its surrounding areas are a birder’s paradise. Sea lovers can enjoy the fishing spots, book a chartered deep-sea fishing trip or cruise down the river for a beautiful sunset picnic aboard a river boat.

Also, add Hermanus Wine Route to your bucket list and savour locally produced wine, brandy, gin and craft beer.

The art and culture scene is steeped in history.

Visit more than 20 diverse art galleries in the town, showcasing beautifully created masterpieces by local artists or learn more about the town through its museums and guided tours.

Shop at the bustling town markets that boast delicious food, delightful treats and incredible deals.

This week, we learn more about Xhosa cuisine from Mzansi Restaurant’s head chef, Nontuthuzelo Siyo.👩🏾‍🍳

Joining her to learn more about the cuisine is @vos_james, Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Growth and Tourism at the City of Cape Town.

The Langa restaurant was established in 2008 with the aim of “Sharing Mama’s Love”.

• Umngqusho (samp and beans)

• Umxhaxha (butternut and corn wrapped in aubergine)

You can sample these and a variety of other South African dishes at Mzansi. 😋
