Constantia Royale, Constantia

Constantia Royale isn’t your average wine farm. It is only open twice a week and wine tastings are offered in an unusual location: a tunnel under the M3 freeway. The bespoke experience allows visitors to taste current and older vintages of Constantia Royale and the Don’s Reserve while soaking up the glorious views. Tastings are from Tuesday to Saturday, between 11am – 4pm. You do not have to make an appointment.

Anura, Stellenbosch

Positioned on the foothills of the Simonsberg Mountains, Anura in Stellenbosch features an impressive white and red wine collection. Enjoy panoramic views overlooking vineyards, ponds and fynbos when you book one of their tastings. Cheese lovers can also appreciate their wines with Forest Hill Cheesery products, including options like brie, camembert, Danish White, and Swiss Mountain cheeses.

The winetasting centre is open from Monday to Sunday between 9am to 5pm. Bookings are not required for groups of less than 8 guests.

Stark-Condé Wines, Stellenbosch

Stark-Condé Wines is an all-in-one destination, home to award-winning wines, a postcard-perfect eatery, and accommodation. With an impressive wine lineup, guests can enjoy tastings overlooking the water. Tasting options include The Best of Stark-Condé (2 white and 3 reds), Wine & Chocolate Pairing, and a White Wine Trio. Be sure to visit the Postcard Cafe, open daily from 8 am to 4 pm. The menu offers an extensive selection of breakfast and lunch options, as well as an assortment of desserts and cakes.

Maastricht Wines, Durbanville

Maastricht Wines, a family-owned estate and one of the newer additions to the Durbanville Wine Valley, is a charming hidden gem with a distinctly European flair. This farm offers a diverse selection of wines, including  MCC tastings.

Pair your tasting with something from the snack menu, featuring cheese platters, traditional Dutch bitterballen and potato-and-cheese croquettes. Children can roam freely on the open lawns and meet some of the friendly resident animals that call the farm home.

Villiera Wines, Stellenbosch

Villiera is a leading South African producer of award-winning Cap Classique and still wines. Tucked away near Stellenbosch, this hidden gem is known for its indoor or outdoor wine-tasting experience. You can also go on a game drive to the wildlife sanctuary. Together with two neighbours, Villiera set aside 230 Ha of land to form a Wildlife Sanctuary for the game. These conservation efforts take place alongside an indigenous tree-planting project, which has since seen 100 000 indigenous trees planted.

Hillcrest Estate, Durbanville

Hillcrest Estate is a boutique winery in the Tygerberg Hills on the outskirts of Durbanville. Here, you can enjoy their award-winning wines and olives, indulge in a casual meal, or go fishing. The wine farm also offers a special kiddie’s tasting, paired with a selection of snacks like pretzels and marshmallows. Tastings are available from Monday to Saturday between 10am to 5 pm and Sundays between 11 am and 4 pm.

Ayama Wines, Paarl

Located on the slopes of the Paardeberg Mountain, near Paarl, Ayama is a South African winery with Italian roots. Meaning “someone to lean on” in Xhosa, Ayama offers wine tastings, extra virgin olive oil tastings, and cellar tours on request. Visit the Farm Kitchen known for their Italian meals, including their famous artichoke lasagna, gnocchi, and ravioli, all handmade by expert chefs.

For those who wish to spend the night, the Ayama Manor House has 5 uniquely decorated rooms that can accommodate up to 12 people. The wine farm also hosts regular pasta-making classes, artichoke-picking events, and an Italian festival. The wine farm is open daily.

Karibib Wine Craft, Stellenbosch

Located in the picturesque hills of Polkadraai, Karibib Wine Craft is a unique collaboration of eight small-batch winemakers. Expect to explore a diverse selection of wines, from Karibib’s own collection to Naude wines, Illimis wines, Angus Pauls wines, B-Vintners, Maia wines – just to name a few. Visitors can also enjoy a selection of tapas and wood-fired pizzas, which they can pair with their choice of wines. The wine spot is open from Wednesday to Saturday, between 11 am to 7 pm, and on Sundays between 11 am to 3 pm.
