According to President Ramaphosa, the new system will make travel to South Africa easier, faster and more predictable.
“It will encourage tourism. It will support trade. It will attract investment. It will facilitate skills and knowledge exchange, and at the same time, it will strengthen the integrity of our borders and improve our ability to manage migration effectively,” the President said in a statement.

The ETA is intended strictly for short-term tourism, family visits, or general leisure travel. It does not permit formal employment or extended residency in South Africa. Repeated back-to-back entries to bypass standard residency laws are strictly prohibited by immigration authorities.
Who Can Apply for an Online ETA?
Currently, passport holders from eligible visa-exempt and non-visa-exempt countries can access the online platform. However, entry using an ETA is restricted to designated international arrival points.
To enter South Africa with an ETA, your flight must land at one of the following official airports: Cape Town International Airport, O. R. Tambo International Airport, and Lanseria International Airport in Gauteng. Travellers arriving via land borders, seaports, or alternative airports must ensure they have standard visa documentation before departure.
