Hiring a Motorcycle
If you are contemplating hiring a motorcycle in the city, here are the requirements:
- You must be 25 years or older.
- A valid motorcycle license and at least 2 years of riding experience.
- Provide a copy of your ID document or passport.
- Submit proof of address or accommodation.
- A holding deposit is required for insurance purposes.
- Daily rates vary depending on the model.
Bike Routes

Chapman’s Peak Drive

Safety Tips
Before You Ride
- Choose a reputable rental agency: Rent only from licensed, well-reviewed companies that maintain their motorcycles and offer insurance options.
- Inspect the motorcycle: Check for visible damage, tyre wear, and the condition of brakes, lights, and indicators before leaving the rental facility. Document any existing damage with photos.
- Wear proper gear: Even on warm days, wear a full helmet, jacket, gloves, long trousers, and closed-toe shoes to significantly reduce the risk of injury.
- Understand the insurance coverage: Ensure clarity on what the insurance covers, including third-party liability, damage, and theft.
- Know the local traffic rules: In South Africa, motorists drive on the left-hand side of the road. Familiarise yourself with other local traffic regulations before riding.
During the Ride
- Be visible and alert: Ensure you remain visible to other drivers and stay vigilant, especially at intersections where accidents are common.
- Keep speed in check: Adhere to speed limits, which typically range from 60 km/h in urban areas to 80–100 km/h in rural regions. Always ride at a speed you feel comfortable with.
- Watch for wildlife and pedestrians: In rural and mountainous areas, you may encounter Slow down in these areas and be prepared to stop if wildlife or pedestrians are on the road.
- Plan for changing weather: Cape Town’s weather can change in an instant, especially near the coast. Be mindful of sudden rain or strong winds that may affect riding conditions.
- Avoid peak traffic hours: Cape Town’s rush hours (6:30am–9am and 3:30pm–6pm) can be congested, increasing the risk of accidents. Plan rides outside these times if possible.
Dos and Don’ts for Riding a Motorcycle in Cape Town
Do’s:
- Do carry your license: Ensure you have an international driver’s license or motorcycle endorsement, as required.
- Keep a safe following distance: Allow extra space between you and the vehicle ahead, especially on windy roads.
- GPS is a must: Cape Town has many winding roads; a GPS or offline map will help you stay on track.
- Take breaks: Riding long distances can be exhausting. Plan stops along the way to remain alert and hydrated.
- Get comprehensive insurance: Make sure the rental includes options for third-party liability and damage, especially for high-value bikes.
Don’ts:
- Don’t ride under the influence: South Africa has strict laws against drinking and riding.
- Don’t assume right of way: Be prepared for unexpected lane changes and avoid assuming other drivers will yield.
- Don’t ride in unlit areas at night: Poorly lit roads can increase the risk, especially with animals potentially crossing the road.
- Don’t speed: Many routes around Table Mountain and Chapman’s Peak have sharp turns. Speeding increases the risk of accidents.
