Highly Recommended Waterfall Hikes In And Around Cape Town

Waterfall hikes in Cape Town

Cape Town boasts a variety of unique waterfall hikes, whether you’re an experienced hiker or simply seeking a stroll through nature.

If you are keen to explore some of the city’s waterfalls, you should plan a hike at these locations in Cape Town:

Cecilia Forest Waterfall

Distance: 4.3-km (return)
Difficulty: Moderately Challenging

Just south of Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden, you’ll find the beautiful Cecilia Forest in the Constantia area. Wander along the slopes of Table Mountain, where stunning views of the southern suburbs stretch all the way to Muizenberg, and discover an enchanting waterfall along the way. Start and finish the hike at the Cecilia Forest car park, located off Rhodes Drive in Constantia. Follow the contour path and signs to Cecilia Ravine via Rooikat Ravine. The hike involves some climbing, so be sure to wear sturdy shoes, a hat, and bring plenty of water. The trail is open year-round, and dogs on a leash are welcome.

Krom River, Du Toitskloof

Distance: 6.9-km (return)
Difficulty: Moderately Challenging

If you’re up for a day trip and a challenging hike, visit the Krom River Hiking Trail at Du Toitskloof, just outside Paarl. The trail begins immediately after the Worcester exit from the Huguenot Tunnel. Walk back towards the tunnel, keeping an eye out for the sign beneath the two bridges, which marks the start of the Krom River Trail (it’s towards the end of the path).

This adventurous hike crosses both the Krom and Molenaars Rivers, and takes you through the scenic Limietberg Nature Reserve. The 7km trail offers a rewarding journey, typically taking around five hours to complete the out-and-back route. Don’t forget to carry plenty of water and some snacks to enjoy once you reach the waterfall.

Woodstock Caves

Distance: 6.4-km
Difficulty: Easy (there are some steep inclines as you hike up)

After good rainfall, the small waterfall at Woodstock Cave on the slopes of Table Mountain transforms into a stunning curtain of water. If you’re fortunate, you might even catch sight of a rainbow. The cave itself offers a breathtaking view of the city below. This relatively easy, family-friendly hike is perfect for all seasons, allowing you to enjoy the beauty of nature year-round.

There are two starting points for the hike. The first option is via Tafelberg Road: drive past the Cableway station and park near the start of the Woodstock Cave route. Alternatively, you can begin your hike at Rhodes Memorial, making your way to the King’s Blockhouse. Beyond the Blockhouse, the path splits—take the left fork, and then, at the next junction, turn right towards the Cableway.

Do bear in mind that there are exposed edges near the waterfall, so take care while exploring. Dogs are welcome but must be on a leash.

Silverstream Waterfall

Distance: 2.7 km loop
Difficulty: Moderately challenging

Tucked between Devil’s Peak and the Platteklip Gorge trails, Silverstream Waterfall, located on the front face of Table Mountain, is a hike to add to your bucket list during winter. The trail takes you along the mountain’s edge, providing sweeping views.

We recommend you carry a picnic as you savour the stunning vistas.

While the trail is open throughout the year, it’s best to visit during winter when the rain brings the waterfall to life. Dogs are welcome to join, but please keep them on a leash.

Jonkershoek Waterfalls trail, Stellenbosch

Distance:  9.8km
Difficulty:  Moderately Challenging

This nature reserve just outside Stellenbosch has multiple waterfalls to admire and enjoy. With towering mountains and lush valleys, this is easily one of the most magnificent hikes that you can enjoy with your family. It’s an even walk along the Eerste Rivier (‘First River’) to the Eerste Waterfal (‘First Waterfall’). A steeper climb takes you to the Tweede Waterfal (‘Second Waterfall’) where you can enjoy a break in the shade. Getting to the second waterfall involves walking up the river (you do not cross the river), so be sure to get a map and directions at the ticket office. Climbing to the top of the waterfall is currently not allowed due to safety concerns.

Price: R60 for adults, R40 for children
