Cape Town Carnival is Back and More Lekker Than Ever

Get your colourful outfits ready as the Mother City’s eagerly anticipated event, The Cape Town Carnival, is back on 16 March 2024.

This year’s spectacle will celebrate everything that makes Cape Town and South Africa a cultural melting pot. Themed “Lekker”, Cape Town Carnival CEO Jay Douwes said they wanted to choose a fun theme that represented “our diverse people, our rich culture, undeniable beauty, and our knee-slapping sense of humour”.

What to Expect

The 2024 installment will feature 44 groups with more than 1400 performers ranging from marching bands to dance crews and everything in between. With the countdown fast approaching, the teams are hard at work to put together a spectacle like no other, with new and innovative floats and designs created this year.

Each float and performance at this year’s Cape Town Carnival pays homage to the theme. Think of a technicolour savannah, a deep sea brimming with mythical creatures, a whimsical world made entirely of sweets, and vibrant landscapes of feathers and fynbos.

Behind the Scenes

To give a behind-the-scenes look at the work that goes into the creative process, Cape Town Carnival is running a social media campaign called #followyourheART that focuses on 20 of the participating community groups. The campaign highlights their passion and dedication and illustrates what a life-changing experience it can be to participate in the event.

Out-of-town guests or locals who want to be close to the action can book at Southern Sun The Cullinan, located at 1 Cullinan Street in the Cape Town City Centre. Visitors can enjoy accommodation from R1400 per room per night, including breakfast for 2 people and a carnival pack including a hat, feathers, and a mask. Up to two children under 18 stay and eat breakfast for free when sharing with adults in a Family Room. For more information, visit here:
