The Cape Town Carnival is back and has reverted to its iconic Carnival parade format. The mega-annual event takes place on the Greenpoint Fan Walk on 18 March 2023.
This year’s installment will be “in reverse”. It will start at York Road, Green Point and end at Chiappini St, CBD.
The Cape Town Carnival began over a decade ago with the main aim to celebrate differences and showcase our diverse South African communities. The event, which also promotes tourism to the city, boosts economic activity and generates employment opportunities in the creative sector, makes for a spectacular day out for all ages.
Here’s what to expect at this year’s event:

The Parade Times

Entertainment
This one-day extravaganza will showcase incredible floats, costumes, artworks, dancing communities and entertainment. It is a celebration of fun, passion, and Cape Town’s “Afr’energy”.
The procession will be led by 48 community groups and performers from different parts of the Western Cape, each celebrating South African culture.
Thirteen community groups will also debut alongside well-known performers, such as the Western Province Marching Band and the Eaon Crew.
Giving Back
Beyond being an annual spectacle, the Cape Town Carnival serves a greater purpose. The event brings together exceptional performers and artists to cultivate and sustain local participation in arts and culture while promoting creativity, encouraging celebration and increasing tourism. Additionally, the event creates job opportunities, develops skills, establish networks, and provides visibility and a voice to various communities.
