5 Things to Do at the Top of Table Mountain

Table Mountain Aerial Cableway

No trip to Cape Town is complete without a visit up Table Mountain via the cable car.

The award-winning attraction offers visitors plenty of fun activities to see and experience in the city.

Why Visit Table Mountain?

This award-winning destination is one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature and offers unparalleled views of Cape Town. Flanked by Devil’s Peak and Lion’s Head, this iconic attraction makes up the northern end of the Cape Fold Mountain range.

The mountain, home to over 1460 species of fynbos and animals such as the caracal, mongoose and dassie, has been a protected area for over 100 years. The quickest way to the top is by using the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway, leaving you plenty of time to explore the many activities up the mountain.

We compiled a list of 5 things you can do once you’re at the top:

Free Walking Tour

Go on a free guided walking tour between 9 am to 3 pm daily. The 30-minute departs from the Twelve Apostles Terrace, located below the café, every hour. The walks are conducted by the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway (TMACC) staff, who delve into the story of Table Mountain and the Cableway. There are also self-guided walks you can enjoy, ranging from 15 to 45 minutes. These include the Dassie Walk (15 minutes), Agama Walk (30 minutes), and Klipspringer Walk (45 minutes). The walks are beginner-friendly, and each offers unique views of the city.

Get Adventurous with an Abseiling Experience

Abseil down Table Mountain with Cape Town Abseil. Suited for everyone from beginners to experienced thrill-seekers, this abseiling experience makes for an exhilarating adventure. Indulge in award-winning wines at VIEWS by De Grendel Wines, a wine lounge that offers panoramic views of Cape Town. This chic wine destination also serves bagels, sandwiches, wraps, muffins, cakes and a selection of desserts.

If wine isn’t your preference, head over to Kloud Bar, situated at the Twelve Apostles Terrace. This quick refreshment stop offers Aperol on tap and a variety of beer, spirits, whiskey and liqueurs.

TEN67 Eatery serves meals and snacks. This kid-friendly eatery features dishes inspired by South African cuisine and a selection of fresh salads, sandwiches and pizza slices. The Tap Bar, located at the base of Table Mountain near the Lower Cableway Station, boasts a trendy atmosphere and provides breathtaking views of the Cape Town City Bowl. It’s an ideal spot for those who prefer not to travel up the mountain but still want to feast on remarkable vistas.

Explore the Many Hiking Routes

Once up Table Mountain-you can embark on hikes, ranging from beginner-friendly to challenging. These routes are signposted for your convenience and offer you the freedom to explore the mountain at your own pace.

For the intrepid explorers, the option to hike all the way down is available, or you can choose to return to the top and travel down via the cable car. Please be mindful of the weather conditions, time of day, and always best to hike in groups. There are also routes to the dams on Table Mountain.

Should you require any guidance or information, don’t hesitate to seek assistance from a TMACC staff member, who can provide advice to ensure your hike is both enjoyable and safe.

See the Sunset
