Langa - About the Neighbourhood
Langa is a neighbourhood located in Cape Town that is home to a vibrant community with a rich culture and history. Travellers and visitors to Langa can experience the friendly atmosphere and learn more about the local culture.
In the late 1940s, Langa was one of the first townships to be established for black South Africans. The Apartheid government attempted to control the township by limiting its growth and restricting residents’ movement. However, Langa residents fought back against these restrictions and made the township a center of resistance to Apartheid.
There are many popular attractions in Langa, such as the Langa Quarter, which is a lively market where you can find traditional African crafts and foods. The township is also home to a number of museums and monuments, which offer insight into the culture and history of the area.
Key Attractions inLanga
Langa, meaning sun, was established in 1927 in terms of the 1923 Urban Area Act and is one of the oldest townships in South Africa. It was a focal area for much of the resistance against the apartheid government and as such has a rich – if often turbulent – history.

This Durban girlie is all about chasing thrills and saying “yes” to new adventures. And where better to do that than Cape Town? 🌊⛰️
Armed with running shoes and a sense of adventure, the content creator and runner is on a mission to uncover Mother City gems.
This week, Caitlin is learning how to make koesisters from Bo-Kaap Cooking Tour’s Zainie Misbach.
Caitlin joined Cape Town runner Liam Lategan to discover the story behind one of the Mother City’s most iconic sweet treats. A Sunday staple in many Cape Town homes, koesisters are a Cape Malay favourite, known for their warm spices, hints of naartjie peel and soft, doughnut-like texture.
She grew up eating koesisters in Durban, but had never made them herself… until now.
Caitlin’s Cape Town story continues. Follow Love Cape Town to see what she gets up to next. 👀
