My Cape Town: Armand Hough AKA The Humans Narrative

Award-winning photojournalist Armand Hough leads a riveting life, juggling fast-paced breaking news scenes, capturing city events, and having his work shown across the country. Yet, despite the busyness of his life, he loves seeking solace at some of the city’s top locations.

Born in Bellville, Hough, who affectionately calls himself a Moederstad straatkat (Mother City street cat), has become known for his visual storytelling on his Instagram page, The Humans Narrative. His photographs frequently make front pages of some of South Africa’s leading newspapers.

So, what does he do when he’s not out capturing these moments? Here are some of his favourite things to do in the city:

Morning Swim at Long Street Baths

Armand’s love for the Long Street Baths started with his uncle, who used to swim here when he worked in town. At the original 1908 bathhouse in Long Street, you can swim a few laps in the 25m heated pool or relax in the soothing sauna and steam rooms. Kids can also enjoy hours of fun in the 12m-long splash pool.

“I love coming to swim here in the morning when the sunlight comes in. This place is so aesthetic, especially for a photographer. It’s an amazing place,” he says.

Location: Long Street
Price: R39 for adults, R22 for children, and free for pensioners. There is a monthly pass option for R467

Mid-morning Adventure at Iziko South African Museum

Iziko South African Museum, the first museum in South Africa, holds a special place in Armand’s heart.

Located in the middle of the historic Company’s Garden, the museum is home to 1.5 million items of cultural and scientific significance. Here, you can see traditional outfits from the last century, learn about fossils and ancient insects, and view stone tools made by people more than 120,000 years ago.

For Armand, the connection goes back to his school days, when he’d visit the museum on excursions. He would find a quiet spot at the Whale Well, watching the incredible collection of whale casts and skeletons while listening to the deep, echoing calls of the mammals. Even today, he slips away from the office buzz to find new inspiration here.

“I always come here to relax, to feel the quietness, and to get inspired. In isiXhosa, the word for museum means ‘heart,’ and it’s such a beautiful description of where our history comes from and where the heart of Cape Town truly lies,” he says.

Location: 25 Queen Victoria Street, Gardens, Cape Town.
Price: Standard entry: R80. Price when you present a valid identification: Adults: R50, children aged 5 to 17: R30, and South African pensioners and students (with valid cards): R30. Free entry on Fridays and on commemorative days.

Thrill at SUP Tyger

Armand loves watersports, and he and his wife often spend quality time together on the water.

“I’m probably Cape Town’s worst surfer, but SUPing is a much nicer and easier way for me to enjoy being in the water,” he laughs.

The couple loves paddling together: while Armand steers, his wife keeps an eye out for fish. He recommends heading to SUP Tyger at the Tyger Waterfront canal for a 30- or 60-minute SUP adventure. “Rent a board, grab a paddle, and enjoy the tranquillity of the water,” he said.

Location: Imperial Bank Terraces, Carl Cronje Drive, Bellville
Price: From R150pp. Booking is essential.
