Rhodes Cottage Museum
The Rhodes Cottage Museum is a tribute to British imperialist Cecil John Rhodes. The cottage was once Rhodes’ private retreat, and is where he spent his last days. Now, the cottage serves as a museum that commemorates his life, achievements and death. Located along Muizenberg’s Main Road and ‘historical mile’, it’s also just a short stroll away from the Het Posthuys Museum, as well as a number of eclectic restaurants and vibrant beachfront.
Het Posthuys, or ‘the post house’ in Dutch, is the oldest standing building on the False Bay coastline, and a must-see stop for anyone interested in South Africa’s colonial history. Built not long after the arrival of Jan van Riebeek, the house served as a lookout post to spot enemy ships entering False Bay. Both museums are run by dedicated, knowledgeable volunteers and entry is by donation.
