The Museum of Gems and Jewellery
The Museum of Gems and Jewellery at Prins & Prins takes visitors on the journey of the diamond, from when they first began forming three billion years ago, to where they are found today.
South Africa has a unique history when it comes to gemstones and jewellery. The very first, and hence oldest, piece of jewellery found came from Blombos Cave, a mere 200km from Cape Town. Perhaps this piece of adornment was inspired by the rich collection of gems in the country, which was also the original home of the Cullinan Diamond, the largest diamond ever found.
Here you will learn how diamonds were brought to the surface by South Africa’s extinct volcanoes, or how they ended up washed up on the coastline. This intimate museum is a must-stop for any gem enthusiast or curious traveller.
