Het Posthuys Museum
Het Posthuys, or the post house’ in English, is the oldest standing building on the False Bay coastline, and a must-see stop for anyone interested in South Africa’s colonial history. Built not long after the arrival of Jan van Riebeek, the house served as a lookout post to spot enemy ships entering False Bay. Rhodes Cottage Museum is just up the road.
Located just a stone’s throw from Het Posthuys is the Rhodes Cottage Museum, a tribute to British empire-owner Cecil John Rhodes. The cottage was once Rhodes’ private retreat, and is where he spent his last days. Now, the cottage serves as a museum that commemorates his life, achievements and death. Both museums are run by dedicated, knowledgeable volunteers and entry is by donation.
