Benguela Cove Lagoon Wine Estate
Benguela Cove Lagoon Wine Estate is a wine estate like no other. It is unique in terms of location and activities, situated at the gateway to the Walker Bay Wine region in Hermanus. The estate opens its arms to everybody who loves nature, fun, adventure as well as the finer things in life. It welcomes families with small children and furry friends, small to large groups, as well as young couples looking for a romantic day out. Nudged by the Bot River Lagoon, the estate is truly unique in its setting and loved for the plethora of things to do and taste. This 200 hectare residential estate and working wine farm is teeming with birdlife, with eagles often circling overhead and the blue crane family wondering around the olive groves. Sweeping views of the Atlantic Ocean and the Kogelberg biosphere reserve add to the natural beauty of the environment.
Benguela Cove is quickly gaining recognition for producing stellar wines, receiving their first five star achievement in the 2019 SA Platters Wine Guide. The wines have also been awarded for its craftsmanship on several platforms, led by the winemaker Johann Fourie, making it a sought after estate for wine enthusiasts. Where nobody dared to plant vines 20 years ago in these marginal conditions close to the ocean, the variety of wine cultivars on Benguela Cove is now fully adjusted to this special terroir, consistently producing characterful wines. With 65 hectares under vine and 10 hectares planted to olive trees the focus will always be on small and handcrafted produce, delivering on the expectation of elegance, character and longevity. The 400 tonne winery is equipped with advanced technology, modern and traditional equipment to customise each grape cultivar in their pursuit to make exceptional wines with individual attention.
In terms of food and activities, everything has been meticulously crafted to cater to any of your needs, seven days a week. Visitors are encouraged to pop in for a light bite, experience one of the specially curated food and wine tastings (including wines paired with chocolate, charcuterie, and oysters) while you sit back with spectacular views of the Bot River lagoon and Atlantic Ocean. Guests can also enjoy afternoon tea experiences in the English style tea salon. The Tea Terrace is a popular and elegant venue for kitchen teas and baby showers. The Moody Lagoon Restaurant offers laid back bistro-style dining for lunch and a more bespoke fine dining experience from Thursday to Saturday evening. Chef Annie Badenhorst will showcase her bespoke dishes with the Benguela Cove Estate wines sold at cellar door prices.
Families will fall in love with the Adventure Pirate Golf Course, complete with a safe Splash Pad where the little ones can col down. There is also the Black Beards Diner where they can enjoy hamburgers, ice cream, hot-dogs, and hot chocolate during the winter season.
To customise your experience, they offer daily cellar and vineyards tours, wine blending and pontoon trips on the lagoon. Keep an eye on their events calendar for fun-filled experience throughout the year, including winemaker’s lunches, art exhibitions, food and wine fairs and many more.
