Aunty Nitas Tours

“Aunty Nita's Tours is a tour operator based on the Cape Flats of Cape Town. They offer special trips
that explore local communities and culture in the Cape Flats area. Anita Hermanus, aka Aunty Nita,
has lived on the Cape Flats her whole life. She uses her personal stories and knowledge of the area to
give visitors real, meaningful experiences, helping to change common ideas about townships and the
people who live there.

Aunty Nita's Tours does things differently. They give visitors a chance to directly meet local people,
see important historical places, and learn about those heroes helping the community within the Cape
Flats. The company's main goal is to show off how diverse, strong, cultured, historic, and full of
potential these communities are.

Cape Flats Tour Offering:
These are 4/5 hour tours including a pick up and drop off at a hotel in the City Centre. They generally
start with an introduction in District 6 (excluding the museum) before heading out to the Cape Flats.

The Forgotten Heroes: looks at the political past of the Cape Flats, showing how the “Coloured”/Mixed
Race community helped fight for South Africa's freedom. You visit important historical spots and
monuments, such as the Trojan Horse Memorial, places remembering Ashley Kriel, Dulcie September,
and other sites connected to the fight against apartheid in the 1980’s. The tour finishes with a
traditional meal, cooked and served by a local aunty, helping visitors connect deeply with the culture.

The Unsung Heroes: shows off the good things happening right now on the Cape Flats and the positive
stories from the communities. Visitors get to meet various groups and projects like First Community
Resource Centre, SEED or 9Miles Project. The trip shines a light on organisations using unique social
ideas in helping young people, caring for the environment, and building strong communities. As food is such a pivotal part of life, it too ends with a taste of local cuisine from the Cape Flats.

Walking Tours
Having cut her teeth as a guide doing walking tours in the City of Cape Town, Aunty Nita still loves
showcasing the Mother City from this vantage point. She does 90 min to 2-hour walking tours telling
the origin story of Cape Town through the eyes of a local who grew up here.
