Street Art Colouring The Mother City With Pride

For LGBTQ+ travellers searching for destinations that are inclusive, safe, and full of authentic experiences, Cape Town has been stepping proudly into that space.

Cape Town Tourism (CTT) has launched a series of creative interventions to reinforce the city’s image as a place where everyone is welcome. Through the Go All Out Club, CTT brings together businesses committed to making Cape Town a place where everyone can explore freely and authentically. The goal is for visitors not just to see Cape Town, but to feel the love.

Street Art

One of bold, creative activations is the Go All Out LGBTQ+ Street Art Project, a collaboration with the Ruth Prowse School of Art in Woodstock. This year, the Go All Out Street Art Design Competition challenged students to turn street art into powerful messages, celebrating love, diversity, and visibility with every brushstroke.

From the submissions, there were two winning designs that stood out. The winning artists include Stuart van der Westhuizen and Celine Ndzana, who won a cash prize and bragging rights to their art works being displayed at top Cape Town locations. Two designs have already been created. The final design will be commissioned in late November by illustrator and artist Yay Abe.

“These murals are more than just beautiful additions to the city’s skyline. They are invitations to see, to feel, and to celebrate,” says Carel Stadler, Marketing Partnerships Manager at Cape Town Tourism.

“They speak to locals, visitors, and dreamers alike, reminding us that inclusion isn’t a policy or a tagline; it’s a living, breathing part of a city’s soul,” he added.

Where to Find the Murals

Cafe Manhattan

At Café Manhattan in De Waterkant, the oldest queer restaurant and bar in Cape Town, “More Love” by Stuart van der Westhuizen reimagines the legacy of Tom of Finland, an icon of gay art and culture. Stuart’s piece demonstrates compassion and connection, a reminder to passers-by that every kind of love deserves to be seen.

Address: 74 Waterkant St, De Waterkant.

Sea Point Promenade

On the Sea Point Promenade, Celine Ndzana’s “Waves of Pride” brings the wall to life with flowing bands of colour. Its flowing waves of colour mirror the nearby ocean, which represents unity and diversity, and celebrate the resilience of Cape Town’s LGBTQ+ community.

Address: 249 Beach Road Sea Point.
