City Hall - About the Attraction

Cape Town City Hall is the grande architectural dame of the city and is home to the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra – the performances take place in the Grand Hall which boasts an impressive 3 165 pipe organ.

This Edwardian masterpiece is one of the oldest (built in 1905) and most central public spaces in the city. It has been renovated and preserved and boasts stunning stained glass features, intricate mosaic floors and a spectacular marble staircase. The tower overlooking the Grand Parade houses a clock and a number of bells modelled on the Big Ben. Make sure to go across the road (to the Grand Parade) and get a picture of the imposing building in the background.

City Hall is popularly known as the place former South African President, Nelson Mandela gave a speech from, a couple of hours after his release from prison on 11 February 1990. Visitors will see a statue of the great Nobel Peace Prize winner on the balcony from where he addressed his people. There is also an exhibition inside City Hall dedicated to this icon.

City hall was originally built to house the City of Cape Town’s offices but the city’s administration duties were moved to the Civic Centre. Visitors to the city will also find the Cape Town Tourism Visitor Information Centre on the ground floor of City Hall.
