When travelling, you need to be connected. Roaming charges can be expensive, and a local SIM card can save you a lot on your trip. Cape Town Tourism has partnered with Vodacom to get you connected in just a few minutes.

Will your phone work with a South African SIM?

If you want to use your own cell phone, you’ll need to ensure that it’s compatible with GSM networks. Before you leave your home country, contact your service provider and find out. If the cell phone locked for use abroad, you can find out about their unlocking policy.

Getting a South African SIM card

If you have an unlocked cell phone of your own, getting a local SIM is easy through Cape Town Tourism and Vodacom. Head to any of our Visitor Information Centres, with locatons at the Cape Town International Airport, city centre, Somerset West, Canal Walk, Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden, Simon’s Town, the Lower Cableway Station at Table Mountain, V&A Waterfront, or the City Sightseeing Depot on Long Street. You can also get hold of a SIM at any of Vodacom’s stores, nationwide.

RICA is a law that requires all SIM card users to register their personal information against their cellphone numbers. New Starter Packs cannot be activated if they have not been RICA’d.

As a foreign visitor to South Africa, you will need the following to register your new starter pack.

  • Your Passport
  • Accommodation booking confirmation or proof of accommodation whilst visiting the country

All you need to do is arrive, with your passport and proof of accommodation and the Cape Town Tourism team will have you connected in under 5 minutes.
