Live Music Venues in Cape Town

From jazz to acoustic, upbeat jams to flat-out rock ’n roll, Cape Town’s live music scene is brimming with exciting sounds to lend your ear to.

Cape Town is known to be a creative hub of note, especially when it comes to live music, and there are a myriad of bars, clubs, and eateries that host top local, as well as international muso’s who play everything from jazz to acoustic, rock ’n roll to soul, almost every night of the week. Here are a number of the Mother City’s most popular live music venues where you can go and get your foot a-tapping.

Alexander Bar

One of Cape Town’s most unique venues, Alexander Bar is part bar and eatery, part live music venues. While the downstairs area is where you can get a drink and a bite, it’s upstairs where the action is. The Bar most notably puts on a variety of acts, mainly live jazz on Tuesdays and laid-back folk jams on Wednesdays.

Asoka

Another jazzy venue, and eatery of note, is trendy Asoka. Situated in Kloof street, just up the road from the city centre, this lounge, bar and restaurant is a favourite among the city’s ‘in’ crowd, especially on a warm summer’s evening. However, Asoka is also well known for its lively jazz sessions every Tuesday night from around 8:45pm to 10:30pm, after which a DJ takes over to get the dance floor pumping.

Mama Africa

Mama Africa on Long street is an institution in Cape Town, and for more than 20 years, she has opened her arms to both tourists and locals who come to enjoy the delicious African inspired dishes, and lively atmosphere. Mama Africa is also a buzzing live music venue where three marimba bands entertain guests with their lively sets. Each band plays twice a week.

Blah Blah Bar

Known for hosting epic live music performances and quirky atmosphere, Blah Blah Bar is more of a creative community where like-minded people meet, than it is just a bar. The venue has played host to a number of Cape Town’s top bands, and they are always open for suggestion. If someone has a great idea for a show, they’ll embrace it. That’s the kind of vibe you’ll find at Blah Blah Bar.

The Melting Pot

A little farther afield, The Melting Pot is situated in the sleepy False Bay suburb of Muizenberg. This tiny venue’s main focus is on discovering and nurturing new talent, and their popular open-mic nights are popular with both up-and-coming and established artists alike. As the name suggests, The Melting Pot serves up everything from laid-back folk, to soulful jazz, and straight up rock ’n roll.
