Aquila’s story began in 1999 when its owner Searl Derman set about searching for the perfect piece of land to re-introduce the Big 5 to the Western Cape. He came across a nature reserve in Touws River that would later become Aquila Private Game Reserve. Aquila is named after the endangered black or verreaux eagle (Aquila verreauxii) and is a two-hour drive from Cape Town.

While they can’t welcome you right now, here are five things about Aquila Private Game Reserve that are worth waiting for.

Home to the Big 5

The 10 000 hectare conservancy has evolved from being home to various antelope species only to becoming the home of the Big 5 – elephant, lion, buffalo, rhino and leopard – as well as a a number of other wild game, which roam freely on the reserve.
