Visit these Cape Town attractions from your living room

We’re on a nationwide lockdown for now, so while we can’t welcome you physically, please enjoy these virtual tours of Cape Town. They’re sure to get you excited for your future trip to the Mother City.

Table Mountain

Cape Town locals are pretty fond of the mountain that presides over their city… and with good reason! Table Mountain, which is home to the richest, yet smallest floral kingdom on earth, was voted one of the New Seven Wonders of the World in 2011. The easiest option for getting up the mountain is the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway. The journey up the mountain takes about five minutes and the cars rotate through 360 degrees during the trip, giving you spectacular views of the mountain below.

Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens

Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens is a favourite among locals and visitors alike for many reasons: picnics on the lawns, hiking up Skeleton Gorge, enjoying a glass of chilled Chardonnay before a summer sunset concert, exploring the many shady trails, and taking in the panoramic views from the canopy walkway, to mention just a few.

Here’s a taste of what you can expect on your visit to Kirstenbosch when we welcome you back!

Boulders Beach

Boulders Beach in False Bay offers something extra special – a colony of African Penguins in all their smartly dresses, waddling glory. The endangered colony of African penguins settled at Boulders Beach in the 1980s and has grown to several thousand since then. When you do visit we ask that you don’t get close to the penguins and do not feed them.

In the meantime, here’s a virtual tour of Boulders Beach by 360southafrica.com.

Groot Constantia

Groot Constantia is one of the country’s most popular wine estates. Known for its rich history – it’s the oldest wine-producing farm in the country – and its award-winning wine, the estate is a haven from the hurly-burly rush of the city. Groot Constantia is a sprawling estate, home to two restaurants, a museum and a wine tasting facility that is a hive of activity. So, while the vine plays a huge part, there is so much more on offer here.

Robben Island

Robben Island has a rich and wretched history. It’s probably most famous for being a political prison; the one where Nelson Mandela, South Africa’s first democratically elected president, served 18 of his 27 years in jail. In the 17th and 18th centuries, the Dutch sent political prisoners from the Dutch East Indies to the island. There is a Kramat (holy shrine) on the island dedicated to the Prince of Madura – Pangeran Chakra Deningrat – who died on the island in 1754, and the first chief imam of the Cape spent 13 years (from 1780 to 1793) imprisoned on the island.
