The Sun Met

The Sun Met is the jewel in the Cape horse racing calendar, attracting 50,000 spectators, and not just for the horses.

It’s held at the Kenilworth Race Track (the oldest in the country), and attending the Sun Met will ensure you start your February in style. Dress to the nines along with thousands of locals and tourists at the biggest racing event on the Cape Town calendar.

The Met will take place on February 1st, 2020, and is a huge event on Cape Town’s social calendar. It was first run in 1883 (as the Metropolitan Mile), and it is now one of the most anticipated events in the country.

The Theme

The theme changes annually and an award is given to the best-dressed. The Sun Met, Africa’s Richest Race Day, has announced African Luxury: Visionaries as the theme for 2020.

Gareth Flusk, Sun InternationalEvents & Entertainment Manager commented: “We want to pay homage to the visionaries. To introduce a platform where creatives of all kinds can showcase their ideas. To write and share their stories through fashion, music, tech and horse racing. Where imagination comes to life in all aspects.”

“It’s about the vision for Africa and stepping into 2020 with a vision for who we are as Africans and showcasing the richness of what it means to be Africa. We are excited to see what everyone’s interpretation of the theme will be,” concluded Flusk.

If you want to stand a chance to win, you’re going to need to really bring your A-game. This event attracts the most glam, fashion-conscious people in town—among them, actors, models, and other famous people. If you want to fit in, you’re going have to go all out. If you want to stand out, well… good luck!

Tickets

The Met is popular, very popular, so you can bet it’s going to get busy. The 50,000 tickets are snapped up, so make sure you get them early. General access can get a bit crowded, so we recommend you look at other ticket options if you want a bit more room to move, with private picnic areas and Bedouin tents just some of the options available.

The Vibe

The weather around this time of year can get hot ( up to 35ºC) so make sure you plaster on the sunscreen and keep some water handy. Get to the race track early to get a good spot by the trees, because once you set up camp, you will be there for the duration of the day. The best spots go quickly.

This year Black Coffee, Themba (formerly known as Euphonik) and Da Capo. Trevor Stuurman, Palesa Mokubung, Holly Rey, Courtnaé Paul, Imprint ZA, Masa Mara, and Basel Grey will bring fashion and music to life as the official Visionaries of the event.

For most of the day, the horses take centre-stage, but when night falls the event really gets going. The DJs bring the tunes, and visitors dance the night away, sipping drinks and mingling with the who’s-who of Cape Town.

Other Events

There are plenty of other races held at the Kenilworth Race Track throughout the year, but one of the most popular is the L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate, a smaller and more exclusive event held two to three weeks before the Met every year.
