6 Reasons to Visit the Silo District

Silo Hotel

The Silo District at the V&A Waterfront is one of Cape Town’s newest hubs, and it has plenty to offer. From cutting-edge art to gourmet food and world-class shopping, the area has something for everyone. With new additions like the Silo District, Cape Town is fast becoming one of the coolest cultural hubs to visit in the world.

The Art

The real star of the Silo District is the Zeitz MOCAA, Africa’s largest art museum. It showcases the incredible art of Africa and its diaspora and is a truly world-class institution. The architecture alone makes the museum worth a visit. The building is made up of curved concrete lines, with light pouring in through the cylindrical structures. It’s housed in an important historical landmark – the old grain silos, built in the 20s – and the building gives visitors a stunning cross section of the old industrial site.

The Food and Drink

The Silo District offers a veritable feast of dining options. Go for oysters and bubbles at the Silo Rooftop, or platters and craft beer at The Yard. Pick up a quick lunch at Woolworths’ Now Now, and stop in at the Lindt Chocolate Studio to pick up some dessert and watch chocolate being made.

You can share delicious tapas at Si! Cantina-Sociale, grab sushi from the Sushi Box, or sit down for classic breakfasts and lunches at the Granary Café. The RED Roof and OUIBar + KTHCN at the Radisson RED are great options for light deli meals or more serious dining, and the Willaston Bar is the perfect spot for a sundowner and charcuterie board.

The Designers and Stores

The District has attracted some of the country’s most prestigious designers. Kirsten Goss showcases beautiful hand-finished jewellery, Kat van Duinen offers luxury fashion and leather products, and Opus is the home of designer botanical pieces. You’ll also find the Guild gallery, showcasing the best South African design, and Glasshouse Rejuvenation, a high-end beauty salon.

The History

The Silo District is an important historic site. The Zeitz MOCAA is built in the remnants of the old grain silo which was once the tallest building in Africa. It was built in 1921 and served as harbour-side storage for grain. This area was, in the 1920’s, the industrial hub of Cape Town and today you’ll find architecture, themed restaurants and museums that pay homage to that history.

The Accommodation

The Silo District is home to the Radisson RED, the arty and eclectic hotel overlooking Table Mountain and the Waterfront. The rooms offer all the amenities you need, from free Wi-Fi to TV and a sound system, and have oversized windows to enjoy the views from.

The Seaside Vibe

The Silo District is located just a short walk from the Clock Tower Precinct, with its sweeping harbour views. There are numerous rooftop bars and restaurants to soak in the view from, and a short walk will take you to the docks where you can watch the seals play or hop on board a boat tour.
