Macassar Pottery

Macassar Pottery Studio was founded in 2010, working primarily with the community of Macassar, Cape Town with the aim of skilling community members – especially the youth – in the art of pottery and the production of fine pieces.  The studio is co-owned by the employees and as a self-sustaining enterprise has been recognised in the field of responsible tourism.

Community members, once upskilled and producing unique products, use the fashioning of clay to express their personal stories.

The Udu drum, with its origins in Nigeria, is a popular piece to purchase and play, while the African Ocarina, a unique clay flute, has been developed in Macassar and is designed in such a way to allow for easy playing for both experienced and inexperienced.  It is ideal for encouraging lovely melodies from very young community members.  The clay flute is also an ideal gift to take home after a visit to Cape Town.

Visitors and corporates can also enjoy a unique and creative experience at Macassar Pottery.  Re-connecting with the earth, hearing African stories and going home with an instrument they have fashioned, is a memorable and unique South African experience.

Macassar Pottery won the UnLtd SA entrepreneur award in 2012, was a finalist in the 2013 Premier’s Entrepreneurship Recognition Awards, longlisted in the Africa Responsible Tourism Awards 2015 and accepted as a Spark Changemaker in the same year.
