Eseltjiesrus Donkey Sanctuary

Eseltjiesrus was established in 2007 and plays a pivotal part in the welfare and care of donkeys.

The Sanctuary is situated just outside the village of McGregor in the Langeberg District and is open to the public Thursdays to Sundays from 10am to 4pm. There is no entrance fee as we operate on a donations basis.

At this retirement home for donkeys, visitors can experience professionally-led guided tours of our rescued donkeys. We also cater for educational visits for animal lovers wanting to find out more about these gentle and wise creatures. (Tours of six and more to pre-book please.)

This is an ideal opportunity for visitors to meet and adopt one of our donkeys, and for existing adopters to come and cuddle their chosen long ears!

Our tranquil Coffee Shop set in a magnificent garden setting has aromatic fresh coffee brewing all day, light refreshments, including our own baked cakes and scones and a range of vegetarian delicacies. We are licensed to sell wine and regional craft beer at our eatery situated next to our dam teeming with abundant birdlife.

Our book shop has a wide range of excellent books while our gift shop sells many donkey-themed gift items.  Our branded Eseltjiesrus wine is a perfect gift and memory of your visit. The proceeds from these sales all go towards the care of our donkeys.

We also offer meditative walks to the melodic braying of our gentle residents, taking you to our memorial cairn and historic farm implements and giving a breath-taking view of the Langeberg mountains.

Eseltjiesrus is an ideal place to introduce children to donkeys in a supervised manner. Our donkeys often form a special bond with children and disabled visitors. Our buildings and experience are adapted for handicapped access.

We also are pet friendly – so please feel free to bring Fido along – as long as he (or she) remains on a lead.

Our motto of “Creating a culture of caring” has shown an increase in awareness about these often maligned creatures. Your visit to Eseltjiesrus will leave you in awe of how intuitive and important donkeys really are. In turn, we know we will have found another supporter for donkey rights!
