De Hoop Collection Nature Reserve
The De Hoop Nature Reserve, just three hours from Cape Town, can be approached from either Swellendam or Bredasdorp.
It has a 70km coastline that is a Marine Protected Area and is home to 40% of the world’s Southern Right Whales every year during Whale Season. Whale Season runs from June to November and De Hoop is known as the best location for land-based Whale Watching. The 36 000 hectare reserve is also a World Heritage Site and home to 86 different mammals and 260 different bird species.
Hike or cycle amongst herds of Eland, Bontebok and Cape Mountain Zebra or settle next to the 19km De Hoop Vlei and spot Flamingos, Pelicans and Blue Cranes to name a few.
The accommodation is as diverse as the reserve and ranges from comfortable self-catering cottages and houses to luxurious suites and manor houses. The variety of self-catering units that are available can sleep 4, 6 or 8 guests and are fully equipped for self-catering. The 12 Suites are perfect for couples and honeymooners seeking a romantic getaway. Rates for the suites include dinner and breakfast in The Fig Tree Restaurant. De Hoop accommodation caters for everyone, from the traveller on a budget to families and couples.
One of the best ways to get to know the surroundings is with a guided activity which could be Bird Walks, Marine Walks, Cycling and Boat Cruises or simply gazing at the clear skies at night while a guide points out constellations and tells you star stories. Hiking trails, cycle trails, the deserted coastline and the reserve’s facilities will have your days jam packed. A minimum 2 night stay is recommended to take full advantage of this off-the-beaten-track location.
