The votes are in and you’ve decided. Malikah Hendricks bagged the R10 000 prize for Love Cape Town’s Local is Lekker competition.

In September, we asked our followers to go out and film the magic of the Mother City for a chance to win R10 000. After our judges decided on the top three videos, we shared them on Facebook and Instagram and asked our audience to vote for their favourite. Malikah’s video was the favourite on both platforms.

“I always find myself being a tourist in Cape Town, I feel this competition was made for me as I am adventurous and absolutely love exploring the Mother City. Cape Town has so much to offer,” says Malikah, from Ottery in Cape Town.

Malikah, 20, is currently a third year Pharmacy student at the University of the Western Cape. Once she’s completed her undergraduate studies, she plans to further her studies in the pharmaceutical manufacturing industry.

While she pursues Pharmaceuticals, she realises there may be other career options for her. “Winning this prize means a lot to me. It has made me realise that I have potential to pursue a career which I absolutely love. I dream of having a job which I enjoy as this means that I wouldn’t need to work a day in my life.”

She says: “Video content creation is a hobby which I absolutely love doing and I would definitely consider doing it professionally.”

Malikah started creating videos to capture memories of the adventures she and her friends would go on.

“In 2019 I made a local bucket list and ever since then I have been ticking off and filming my experiences of the Mother City to cherish forever as memories.” Despite not having any experience in videography or much equipment to use besides her GoPro, she enjoys creating videos and watching them after.

Malikah’s plans for her prize include buying a new laptop. “My laptop recently stopped working and this also meant that I needed to edit this video on my phone,” she reveals.

Apart from the laptop she also would like to tick another adventure off her local bucket list.  “Perhaps abseiling off Table Mountain or shark cage diving.”

Malikah’s advice to visitors

“There is absolutely no excuse for staying indoors or being bored in Cape Town. There’s so much to do and so much fun for everyone and all personality types. Cape Town truly has everything and more.

“An absolute must do before you go home (besides the obvious – going up Table Mountain) is a sunny afternoon Chapman’s Peak drive.”
