Deus Café at The Homestead of Perpetuity
Born in Australia from a love of motorbikes and surfing, Deus Ex Machina comes to Africa for the first time. Housed in the former 17th century Kronendal estate, the building has had a quirky new makeover and is now home to a cafe, bar, bakery and a shop selling Deus clothing and accessories.

Further down the hall there is the cosy Boat Room with its fireplace, ideal for small meetings, then the courtyard itself – outside under the mature trees, lots of seating in a peaceful setting where you can hear the birds chirp. It’s a great place for breakfast!
From the menu choose from Light Bites to Deus Classic Mains, as well as salads, pizzas and desserts, a selection of wines, cocktalls or beers, or just enjoy a pastry or croissant from the bakery with a morning coffee.
Evening events vary from a visiting Tattoo artists on Taco Tuesdays, Super Ok Fridays where vinyls are roasted to Sunday Sessions featuring local musicians.
You will also find a resident barber, board shaper, custom bike builder and the local Crosffit Gym on site.
The Resident Ghost
In the mid-19th century Elsa, the beautiful daughter of General Sir Abraham Josias Cloete fell in love with a British soldier stationed at the garrison in Hout Bay. Due to the situation at that time their love was doomed. It is said she would wait for him at the front gable window, whilst he watched for her under the oak trees across the road. Despairing of their love, the soldier hanged himself under one of those same trees, whilst Elsa died of a broken heart.
