Table Mountain National Park has closed the Lion’s Head section of Table Mountain with immediate effect, as hikers were not complying with lockdown regulations.
Lion’s Head closure
— SANParks TMNP (@TableMountainNP) June 6, 2020
The nature of the Lion’s Head trail doesn’t allow for adequate social and physical distancing, particularly when there are many people out hiking.
While SANParks also said users were not adhering to lockdown alert level 3 regulations, it did not specify which rules were broken.
The majority of Table Mountain National Park is open, but the following remains closed under lockdown level 3: Boulders Beach; Cape Point; Silvermine Gate 1 and 2, Upper Tokai; Lion’s Head and all picnic sites. Signal Hill remains open.
TMNP RULES FOR LEVEL 3 HIKING
- Wear face masks while hiking.
- Maintain a physical distance of at least 1.5 metres when undertaking recreational activities.
- As per alert level 3 lockdown regulations, you are permitted to exercise between 06:00 and 18:00.
- No overnight hiking will be permitted in the park.
