Popular Ice Cream Places in the City

Gelato Mania Camps Bay

Cape Town’s ice cream is so good and plentiful, you could live off of it for a week (or three) without ever having to visit the same place twice. We’ve done extensive research to narrow down the top ten ice cream spots in town. Eat now, thank us later.

The Creamery

With trusty favourites like Peanut Butter, Rosetta Roastery Coffee, Sea Salt Caramel, Sweet Cream, and 65% Chocolate you’ll always find creamy greatness at one of the Creamery branches in Cape Town. Every month they have a new flavour to try, and try you must! Each branch also has an ice-cream covered treat on offer, like warm waffles in Newlands or freshly baked cookies in Mouille Point.

They’re also at popular markets like the V&A Waterfront’s Food Market and the Earth Fair Markets in the CBD on Thursdays, so you have a good excuse to try every flavour.

Moro Gelato

If there is one nation who knows how to do things with flair, it’s the Italians. One taste of this Gelato will make you feel like you’re being serenaded by an Italian with your feet in the Trevi Fountain. Their Gelato is freshly made with local produce and spices and their vegan-friendly sorbet might bring tears of joy to your eyes. Their pastel-coloured parlour on Long Street is Wes Anderson perfection and they’re open till late.

Plus, they have chocolate fountains with dark and white chocolate pouring like a waterfall as you’re reading this. They’re also have a shop in Sea Point and they’re at the Oranjezicht City Farm Market at the V&A Waterfront on Saturdays.

De Villiers Chocolate

There are at least a hundred reasons you should visit the idyllic Franschhoek Valley, one of the top ten being the delicious ice cream at De Villiers Chocolate. This bean to bar chocolate company focuses on ethically and sustainably sourced products used to make the most incredible truffles, confectionery, chocolate thins, bars and of course, ice cream. They have 15 flavours of ice cream and sorbet to choose from and their own gluten-free cones made fresh daily.

Their café also offers chocolate and ice cream tasting so you can really taste why there is no place quite like De Villiers Chocolate anywhere else in the world. Once you’ve tried the ice cream, take a chocolate salami, dark chocolate pizza, or bag of spiced drinking chocolate beans home with you to spread the love.

Unframed puts the “art” in “artisanal” with their ice cream flavours that cater to the sophisticated palette. They also have a big variety for vegans and the lactose intolerant, which has made them a favourite on trendy Kloof Street. Unframed makes their ice cream from scratch using seasonal ingredients, meaning their offering is rich in taste and mostly guilt-free. They have ten rotating flavours with at least two sorbets and three vegan offerings available at all times.

Whether you’re looking for something sweet or spicy, you’re guaranteed to find a smooth and tasty flavour to meet your needs.

Gelato Mania

Ice cream lovers will feel right at home in one of the branches of this family-run gelateria in Hermanus, Camps Bay, Newlands, the V&A Waterfront, Green Point, Kloof Street, Sea Point, and Stellenbosch. They have bragging rights to the biggest selection of traditional home-made Italian style ice cream in South Africa, so you’re spoilt for choice.

They also serve waffles and pancakes as well as diabetic and banting-friendly gelato. Their fruity sorbets are perfect for hot summer days.

The Dairy Den

Sea Point’s sweet spot offers delicious soft serves in black Oreo cones that will make you feel like a kid again. Approach with caution though, because once you are there you will most definitely have to try one of their gourmet doughnuts too. The unicorn swirl with its sprinkles and pop of colour comes highly recommended. Their pink Instagram-friendly store on Main Road is just a few minutes away from the promenade. They recently opened a branch in Kenilworth Centre in Cape Town’s Southern Suburbs.

Made without any preservatives, flavourants, colourants or added fats, the gelato from Ice Dream is made with only the freshest ingredients. This gelateria in Hout Bay has dreamy classic flavours as well as some available on special request like Amarula, Roasted Pumpkin, Mascarpone & Almond and Beer. Their dairy free Sorbeto is made with seasonal fruits like sweet melon, litchi, lemon, strawberry and pink grapefruit.

Established in 1993, the brother and sister-run gelateria has a recipe for success that has won over many Capetonians and visitors to Hout Bay.

Fall in love with handmade premium ice cream in flavours like Butter Pecan, Aero, Cookies & Cream, Milo, Saffron & Pistachio and White Choc Poppy Seed. Their freshly baked waffles, brownies, decadent hot chocolate and double thick milkshakes will also have you swooning if you have a sweet tooth.
