Cape Town is increasingly catering for Muslim diners, with a variety of certified halal eateries. Many of them are casual, family-friendly establishments, or takeaway joints, but there are also a few fine-dining options and some wonderful coffee shops.
We’ve put together a list of certified halal eateries in Cape Town for your dining pleasure.
Upmarket or fine dining
126 Cape Kitchen & Cafe at the Hilton Hotel, CBD
126 is the new kid on the block, and we’re excited about it. The restaurant is located in the Hilton Hotel and offers fine food to halal diners. Guests can opt for a tea-pairing, which involves exotic teas to compliment each course. The food is fusion style, with bold flavours.
Sabria’s Restaurant, Wynberg
Sabria’s restaurant, part of the Cosy Corner label, is a family-friendly restaurant for those who want to sit down to enjoy well-presented meals such as steaks, curries, seafood, pasta, salads, and delicious desserts.
On the Square at the Capetonian
On the Square is famous for its hearty Ramadan and Eid feasts, but it operates year-round as a sophisticated place to have lunch or dinner. They also do superb breakfast buffets.
Takeaways and Fast Food
Food Inn has two branches, on Long Street and Rondebosch Main Road respectively. They make something for everyone—burgers, Chinese food, Indian/Pakistani food, Middle Eastern food, pizza, sandwiches, Turkish food, and vegetarian.
Wembley, fast food takeaways (butchery), Belgravia
Wembley is a no-frills take-out joint with a wide range of burgers, grills, and Indian street food. The company also has a confectioners shop and even a butchery where you can find quality halal meat.
Delicious gatsbys, pies, chips rolls, samoosas, and half-moons make Mariam’s Kitchen a must-visit.
Casual and family-friendly
Andalousse Moroccan Cuisine, Woodstock
This Woodstock restaurant has some of the best Moroccan food in town. On arrival, the hosts serve mint tea and Moroccan biscuits. The tagines, kebabs, stews, and shawarmas are fantastic, and there are lovely desserts too.
Taj Mahal, Seapoint and Hout Bay
The Taj Mahal has two branches and claims to make the best Indian food in town. Their rogan josh and naan comes highly recommended, and they do seafood.
This Rondebosch East-based restaurant serves burgers, sandwiches, seafood, and vegetarian fare. They also offer catering services and be booked for events.
Syriana in Sea Point is a must if you love Middle-Eastern food. They offer a wide range of mouth-watering dishes that will keep you going back for more.
Another Cape Town favourite, Bibi’s serves a range of meat, seafood and vegetarian curries and much more! Bibi’s is famous for our homemade pastries prawn chaat. Their butter chicken is also some of the best in town.
Eastern Food Bazaar
This canteen-style takeaway joint features a long row of traders selling everything from shwarmas and kebabs to breyanis and more. It’s affordable, quick, and extremely tasty.
Situated in Bo-Kaap, the historic neighbourhood where Islam in the Cape all began, this vibrant restaurant is renowned for serving the best Cape Malay food. Their masala steak sandwiches are amazing, as is their phenomenal view of the city.
For one of the best butter chicken dishes this side of the equator and other mouth-watering treats, visit Biesmiellah in the Bo-Kaap.
Tashreeqa’s Coffee and Cake Emporium, Rondebosch East
Tashreeqa’s does excellent coffee and baked goods, as well as light lunches. Make sure you try some of the delicious cakes on offer.
Batavia Café, Bo-Kaap
Batavia Café is a quirky little spot with fantastic breakfasts and coffee on offer. There are also light lunches and sweet treats like koesisters.
Bootlegger Coffee Company, Three Anchor Bay
Popular Cape Town restaurant group, Bootlegger Coffee Company, has a certified halal store in Three Anchor Bay. The branch has an exciting milkshake menu available only at this store, with mouth-watering flavours such as Toasted Banana Bread, Peanut Butter Brownie and a Marshmallow-Turkish Delight. The delicious menu also includes No Frills burger for those who find comfort in simplicity, a fresh sesame chicken & pak choi salad or a hearty lamb meat ball hot press sandwich if you’re looking for something a little more adventurous.
Pizza, Burgers, and Grills
Atlantic Express Restaurant
This unique restaurant was carefully restored and designed along the theme of a dining coach. Go for good breakfasts, light lunches and some main meals.
Bin Rashied, Kenilworth
Bin Rashied is one of the best pizza joints in town, and they also do burgers and grills. They often have great specials, and there are a number of branches around Cape Town.
Woodies Burgers, Claremont
Woodies is a burger joint that gained popularity at the V&A Waterfront Food Market. They’ve since stopped trading from there but can still be found in Belvedere Road, Claremont. The burger menu is extensive and they have a “challenge” section on the menu, which includes The Colossus—stacked with four patties.
District Café, Woodstock
District Café is the place to go for burgers, salads, grills, breakfasts, and sandwiches. The food is fresh and tasty, and it’s located in the bustling hub of Woodstock.
