Wondering where in Cape Town you’ll find great street art, or which neighbourhood is best to hit for a good wine tasting session? Look no further, we’ve got it all covered right over here:
Great wine and idyllic views
Where to go: Constantia or Durbanville
It all depends on what perspective you’d like. Enjoy sipping beautifully crafted wine amongst the rolling hills of Durbanville with Table Mountain in full view, or, whilst looking upon mountain crags up close in Constantia. We suggest you try both neighbourhoods to decide which you like best.
Street art and local craft
Where to go: Woodstock
Join a guided group and discover the dynamic street art in the industrial neighbourhood of Woodstock. You’ll also find a range of outstanding local workshops and stores filled with handmade goods. Treat yourself to fine flavours at several restaurants at the Old Biscuit Mill. Better still, be there on Saturdays for the vibey local produce market, The Neighbourgoods Market.
Designer shopping and great coffee
Where to go: De Waterkant
Pay a visit to the cobbled streets surrounding the Cape Quarter Lifestyle Centre to find a wealth of boutique stores, packed full of designer items both locally made and imported. Refuel at a coffee shop before hitting the stores in the Cape Quarter for a second round of shopping.
A stroll with a sea view
Where to go: Sea Point and Mouille Point
Put on your walking – or running – shoes and make your way along the Sea Point promenade starting at the Mouille Point light house and winding your way to mini-golf and an ice cream or two.
Sundowners
Where to go: Camps Bay
Drive over Kloof Nek and you’ll see Camps Bay far below you, while on your left the rugged Twelve Apostles rise up majestically at 90 degrees. On the Camps Bay strip set yourself at any of a number of restaurants to enjoy a drink while watching the sun set over the Atlantic Ocean.
Get your art fix
Where to go: City bowl
Take a walk along Bree and Loop Street and be sure to turn into side streets such as Church and Hout Street to find a variety of outstanding galleries and décor stores along the way. Pop into any one of the huge variety of restaurants you’ll find in the vicinity for a bite to eat.
Laid-back seaside shopping
Where to go: Kalk Bay
The historical village of Kalk Bay welcomes visitors with a range of beautiful stores along busy Main Road. Pop into Casa Boho to find handcrafted leathergoods, as well as the exquisite handloom-woven products from Mungo. Check out the first edition gems at Quagga Rare Books and Art and take a look at vibrant clothing at Papagayo. Follow that up with a seafood feast at Polana or Live Bait at the Kalk Bay harbour.
Kid-friendly day on the beach
Where to go: Hout Bay beach, Fish Hoek beach and Boulders beach
Settle down to a relaxed day at one of these three beaches where the waves gently lap at the sand and your kids can frolic safely while you soak in the sun. At Boulders beach, which is just beyond Simon’s Town, there’s the added joy of seeing African penguins come waddling to and from shore.
Tapas and open air theatre
Where to go: Wynberg
Pay a visit to one of the oldest areas in the Southern Suburbs, the Old Wynberg Village, where you’ll find great tapas at Four and Twenty, as well as a range of gorgeous design, arts and décor shops to check out before heading across the road in the summer months for the annual performance of Shakespeare at the Maynardville open air theatre.
Summer beach action
Where to go: Blouberg
If action and exercise is on your Cape Town to-do list, then the summertime surfing at Blouberg beach should be your first port of call. When the prevailing summer wind is up, then try kite or windsurfing while enjoying the view of Table Mountain in full relief.
Learn to catch some waves
Where to go: Muizenberg
On the other hand, if you’re new to surfing, but keen to give it a shot, then head on over to Muizenberg beach where you’ll find plenty of surf instructors to get you acquainted with the art of catching waves. Afterwards, treat yourself to something delicious from the selection of restaurants along the strip while admiring those perfect sets rolling in.
