Once again, the historic Stellenberg Estate opens its magnificent gardens and sculptures to the public to raise funds for St Joseph’s Home for Chronically Ill Children, located in Montana, Cape Town.
Explore this 18th century and internationally acclaimed garden with its old-world dignity of elegantly manicured lawns and oak trees, and various garden rooms. Whilst most visitors associate Stellenberg Gardens with its amazing and beautiful gardens, one of its hidden treasures is its 2017 installation of dead wood and stones into the “hollowness” of 70-year-old fallen trees. Five sculptures are spread around the gardens and represent themes like Silent Strength, Balance, Sense of Humour, the Lightness of Being and Bless the Fish. Quite fitting this year, is the sculpture (pictured here) on the main lawns, Balance by Michael Speller, honoring Madiba in its inscription: After climbing a great hill, one only finds that there are many more hills to climb – Nelson Mandela.
