Cape Town trains are lively, raucous and sometimes chaotic, but they can be a fun, easy and cheap way to explore the city. The Southern Line is the most popular line for tourists as it runs all the way from Cape Town to Simonstown, and is a great way to see the False Bay coast.
If you’re planning a train trip in Cape Town here are some things you should know:
There are two types of ticket
You have the option of a standard ticket or a Metro Plus ticket. Metro Plus has better seats and doesn’t get as full (except during rush hour.)
It can get noisy
If you travel the trains in Cape Town you’re likely to experience buskers, preachers, and people telling the entire carriage about their lives. It’s all part of the experience.
Leave yourself plenty of time to travel
Although the trains generally function well, they do sometimes experience delays. If you have an urgent appointment then make sure you factor in this possibility.
