The Atlantis dunes are fast becoming one of Cape Towns premier adventure hotspots. The Atlantis dunes cover an area of roughly 32 km², and they are a mere 45 minutes’ drive north of Cape Town. Atlantis is more than a centre for adventure sports: it makes for some amazing photo opportunities with its ever-changing landscape of pure white sand dunes reaching up to 50 metres (160 feet) high. The dunes are a haven for sandboarding, quad biking, extreme 4×4 rides and self-drive dune tours, and off-roading. The area is also frequented by film crews, and the landscape appears in countless movies and adverts. Here’s a guide to the activities and operators in the area.
Sandboarding Cape Town
The magnificent Atlantis dunes are the perfect place to sandboard, and is one of only a handful of sandboarding locations in the world. It’s a fantastic adventure sport that is as exciting as snowboarding, but comes with the bonus of sunshine and warmth. All it takes is a positive attitude, a splash of sunscreen, and a few basic instructions: you will be blasting down a sand dune in no time at all. Sandboarding Cape Town caters for complete beginners, young or old, as long as you are fairly physically fit. The experienced guides will take you and your friends on a high-energy day out, on custom sandboards. Once you master the basics, you can also start throwing in a few tricks, like jumping and ramping off smaller dunes and busting out backflips with 180º spins!
Headout Adventure Quad Bike Tours
Headout Adventure offers guided self-drive quad-bike tours through the amazing dune fields at Atlantis. Quadbiking one of the most exciting things you can do on four wheels. The bikes are automatic and easy to operate. Once you have it down, your guides will take you on an exhilarating ride along trails that twist and turn through sand and bushes, up the dunes and down the descents. If you’re up for it, you can also try out some more technical sections, or even enjoy the rush of defying gravity on the slip-faces.
Extreme Cape Town
The Dune Thrasher at Extreme Cape Town is the first of its kind in South Africa. It’s an extreme adrenaline-pumping off-road experience! The unique vehicle is a high-performance sand rail, powered by a 400 horsepower V8 engine. It seats four passengers and a driver, with racing seat belts. The adrenaline-pumping journey over the dunes will be the ride of a lifetime. For those who like things a little slower-paced, they also offer a relaxing scenic tour.
Self-drive the off-road playground
Atlantis dunes is the perfect location to bring your own 4×4, quad-bike, or two-wheeler for an epic adventure. All you need to do is pick up a dune permit at the cash office in the parking lot at the dune entrance control point. It’s open seven days a week.
Eat and drink
After a long, adrenaline-fueled day in the dunes, you’re likely to be pretty hungry and ready for a cold drink. Head to Melkbos, a coastal resort and popular tourist destination less than 15 minutes drive away.
