Why you should visit Aquila Private Game Reserve this spring

Aquila Private Game Reserve is one of the only places near Cape Town where visitors can see the Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and Cape Buffalo). It’s a luxurious have for overnight stays, and makes for a fantastic day trip too. But there can’t be a better time than spring (September – November) to experience the true magic of Aquila.

Spring at Aquila is baby season

Spring is the time of new life, and Aquila is no exception. The rainy winter has left the landscape lush and green, and wildflowers dot the fields. It’s also the birthing season, and your chances of meeting the newest members of Aquila’s herds are at a peak. Earlier this year, Aquila welcomed a baby hippo to its animal community. August saw a new arrival in the Cape Buffalo herd, making waves in the reserve among visitors—human and animal alike! The baby buffalo was greeted by each female zebra over the course of an hour, like a new born royal.

Good news for conservation

Aquila is thrilled to see new life at the reserve. There are plans to cross over buffalo between Aquila and Inverdoorn, a nearby game reserve, to broaden the genetic pool. Aquila takes conservation initiatives seriously, with a number of projects underway at the reserve.

The Aquila Animal Rescue and Rehabilitation Conservation Centre is a sanctuary for animals that can’t be released into the wild. It also functions as a temporary home for those who need attention before being released. There are also have several one-hectare camps where lions previously doomed to canned hunting can live out their days in peace. Their Saving Private Rhino campaign provides integrated anti-poaching solution available to every private game reserve in Africa which needs assistance defending its wildlife.

The reserve is also home to the endangered Cape Leopard, and those who are really lucky may just spot these elusive cats. Having healthy babies from the Big 5 is exciting, because it means that the herds can thrive in the long term.
