The best Christmas markets in Cape Town

Summer is here with its long sunny days, balmy nights, beach sunsets, cocktails… it’s all you could hope for in a southern hemisphere Christmas. Christmas shopping in Cape Town can be stressful, and all our major shopping centres are brimming with people. Thankfully, we’ve rounded up the best Christmas markets in Cape Town, where you can enjoy delicious food, wine, live music, and a festive vibe while you shop.

Bay Harbour Christmas Market

The Bay Harbour Market is a weekend staple for locals, and there will be four extra markets evenings this December. The musical line-up is reason enough to go, with local bands including Nomadic Orchestra playing live. You can find everything from food, to crafts, to antiques here, as well as various bars and food stalls.

When: Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays in December; 5-10pm

Simply South Gift and Craft Fair

The annual Simply South Gift and Craft Fair has something for everyone. From Christmas-themed treats to decorations and clothing, you’re sure to find the perfect gift. There will be drinks and light meals on offer too.

When: 4-22 December; closed Sundays

Edgemead Christmas Market

If you’re based in the northern suburbs, look no further than the Edgemead Christmas Market for all your holiday season shopping. There will be over 250 stalls, with almost anything you can imagine on sale! This is one of the biggest markets around this Christmas season, so if you’re after a wide variety of gifts, this is the place to be.

The Gift Market @ Curro in Hermanus

Hermanus is a popular day trip on a visit to Cape Town, and this market adds yet another reason to add it to the list.  Spend a day browsing the stalls for the perfect gift, and if you’re lucky, you may even get to get some whalespotting in!

When: 9-23 December; 10am-6pm

Kirstenbosch Craft Market

The Kirstenbosch Craft Market takes place at the old Stone Cottages opposite the entrance of the Kirstenbosch Botanical gardens, at the foot of Table Mountain. Here, you’ll find crafts and artisan foods, along with clothing, pottery, and jewellery.

Fab Ideas Christmas Gift Fair

The annual Fab Ideas Christmas Gift fair is back in Kommetjie for its seventh year. Exxpect all kinds of trinkets as well as fresh produce. It’s also hands-down the best place to shop for Christmas gifts for kids in Cape Town.

When: 14-17 December

The Neighbourgoods Market Holiday Night Market

The Saturday market at the Old Biscuit Mill is one of Cape Town’s most popular markets, and things are getting festive this December with their annual Holiday Market. Hunt for that special something for your friends and family while enjoying the craft beers, cocktails, wine, and speciality street food. You’ll find loads of local design and crafts, as well as vintage and boutique fashion, with a full lineup of local bands to keep you entertained.

When: 15 December; 4pm till late

Groote Post Country Market

The quaint town of Darling is only an hour out of Cape Town, so why not make a day of your gift shopping? While you’re there, be sure to enjoy some of the brilliant Groote Post wines, as well as the Darling Brew craft beers. The market offers wonderful artisan food items and stunning homeware.

When: 17 December; 10am-3pm

Newlands Spring Market

The Newlands Spring Market is a newcomer to Cape Town’s market scene, but it’s making waves. Expect live music, food, and drinks as you hunt the stalls for crafts. There will also be entertainment for all ages.
