We can’t believe it… 2017 is almost over and it’s time to start planning our NYE celebrations. We’ve cherry-picked some of the coolest things happening in Cape Town this 2017/2018 New Year’s Eve.
They’re broken down by category for ease of reference, so whether you’re looking for a real bender, a kid-friendly activity, or a classy dinner, there’s something for you! Before you choose your party, take a look at our New Year’s Eve Survival Guide to make sure you’re well prepared to see the new year in, Cape Town style!
The V&A Waterfront
The Waterfront is a category of its own. This is the only place you’ll find the whole NYE package in one convenient location. There’s live music, dinner, dancing, fireworks, and many parties to choose from. Plus, there are loads of fantastic hotels so if you don’t want to fight the crowds for a cab you can do the whole thing on foot! Belthazar has a fantastic NYE menu if you’re looking for somewhere to eat. Just make sure you book early, whether it’s for dinner, drinks, or accommodation. There’s also plenty to keep kids occupied, so it’s even an option if you’ve got little ones with you.
The Southern Sun Cullinan, City Bowl
Enjoy an unforgettable evening of dining and dancing at the Cullinan. Expect live entertainment and a gorgeous dinner buffet at the Peach Tree Restaurant.
Located at the Alphen Boutique Hotel in Constantia, Blanko is offering a fine-dining experience to kick off the new year. The mouth-watering menu for this year’s celebrations includes aged ribeye, seabass Panzanella, and prawns followed by sweet treats such as chocolate and hazelnut biscotti.
Benguela Cove, Somerset West
If you’re after a wine-paired sophisticated feast to see the new year in, Benguela is the place to be. It is the Helderberg region’s leading fine-dining restaurant, and the executive chef, Jean Delport, has prepared a special menu for the occasion.
Erinvale, Somerset West
This year, Erinvale is throwing a Grease-themed NYE Party. Local band, Shiraz, will provide the tunes and there will be a buffet with delicious food. It all takes place on the outdoor terrace, so you can dance the night away under the stars!
HQ, City Bowl
HQ is hosting a masquerade bash, and this year’s theme is “black Venetian”. Get out your best gowns, three-piece suits, tailcoats, and masks, and wine and dine to the tunes of some of the hottest local DJs.
La Parada, Constantia
La Parada is a Cape Town favourite, and this New Year’s Eve you can expect live music, tapas-style eats, and generally good vibes. Ard Matthews of Just Jinger fame will be playing, with DJ Will Travel hitting the decks later on.
Long Street, City Bowl
Long Street is a party of its own. Every year as midnight approaches, people stream into the area. By midnight, it’s like a pot that has boiled over. There are so many bodies partying on the tarmac that cars can’t get through. It’s a loud, crowded, sweaty affair, and it’s a lot of fun if that’s what you’re into. Pro-tip: book a table at a bar with a balcony (Like Tjing Tjing, The Grand Daddy, Beerhouse, the Waiting Room, or SGT Pepper) so that you can watch the jubilant mess without having to actually be in it. If you hit Long Street, remember you’re going to have a long wait for cabs. Consider booking accommodation nearby.
Rezonance NYE Trance Party, Durbanville
Rezonance is one of Cape Town’s favourite ways to get messy over New Year’s. It’s a four-day festival held at Contermanskloof Farm in Durbanville. They have multiple dancefloors featuring the best local psytrance, progressive, drum ‘n bass, techno, and dubstep acts providing the beats. You can camp at the event too, in true outdoor festival style.
Kinky Summer New Year’s Eve Party, Franschhoek
Kinky Summer takes place outside the city in a lush paradise… expect a place where imagination and whimsical delight are cherished and nurtured. New Year’s Eve is a sacred celebration here, and there will be dancing, love, and light.
Shimmy Beach Club, V&A Waterfront
Shimmy is one of the most highly anticipated NYE parties in town, and this year they’re bringing the world-famous Ibiza F*** Me I’m Famous (FMIF) party to Cape Town. See in 2018 to the sounds of international superstar DJ JP Candela, and friends. This event is all about glamour and class, with dancers and performers flown in from Ibiza. Book a VIP ticket to access a separate VIP entrance, VIP bathrooms, ample unreserved seating, and roaming waiters.
Kirstenbosch – Goldfish
The Kirstenbosch Summer Concert series is in full swing by December, and it peaks on New Year’s Eve with live music by the local acts, Goldfish and Hot Water. This is summer music; dancing music. Bring a picnic, kick off your shoes, and dance the warm evening away. Kids are welcome.
Cape Point Vineyards
Cape Point Vineyards is playing host to the Grand South NYE 2017, with DJ Rene the Frenchman. The theme is “steampunk extravaganza”, and there are prizes for the best-dressed so go all out! The venue features a big hall, with rolling lawns overlooking a dam. It’s great for kids, and there are play facilities there. They’ll also have food stalls and plenty of Cape Point Vineyards wine on offer.
Café Roux, Noordhoek
The Farm Village in Noordhoek is home to this live music venue. There is live music, a full bar, fantastic burgers and salads, and an expansive kids’ play area.
Delvara Farm, Stellenbosch
Here’s another great family-friendly option for the more active among you. Bring picnic baskets and walking shoes and watch the sunset on a beautiful hiking trail through the vineyards. Children are welcome, and they’ll be served a glass of juice while their parents enjoy some bubbly.
Southern Sun The Cullinan, City Bowl
The Cullinan is hotting a family-friendly pool party and braai. There will be braai food, sunshine, and poolside fun. The party starts at 8pm, and kids under 12 pay half price!
