Things to do for Father’s Day in Cape Town
Sunday 18 June is Father’s Day, the day when we show our dads just how much we love and appreciate them. Father’s Day isn’t only about breakfast in bed, gifts of socks or a tie and a tot of his favourite tipple, it’s also about spending the day bonding. What better way to bond with dad than on an adventure? Whether your dad is a foodie, adrenalin junkie, at home in the African bush, or behind a lens, you’re sure to find an adventure that will make him smile right here in the Mother City.
Here’s a look at some great ideas for adventures:
Beer, braais & buffets
Father’s day is a great excuse for an early morning boerie and beer, but if you’re feeling like trying something special, see some of the great specials available in and around Cape Town:
Bacon, Beer & Buffet at Tobago’s
Tobago’s at the Radisson Blu Waterfront hosts a dad-friendly buffet prepared by Chef Norman team. Dads also get a special bacon & beer tasting with the buffet. The buffet costs R425 per person, kids under five eat for free and it’s half-price for kids between five and 12, so it’s perfect for the whole family.

Take to the skies
If you want to give dad an unforgettable experience, seeing the Mother City from the sky is definitely worth a shot! There are numerous ways to get a bird’s eye view, including helicopter rides, paragliding, microlight flights, gyrocopter flights, skydiving for the more daring, or a relaxed paraglide from Lion’s Head.
Get your sea legs
With numerous ways to explore the magnificent Atlantic and Indian Oceans around Cape Town, including scuba diving, kayaking, surfing (or a lesson at least), fishing, or a relaxed yacht cruise, there’s something to appeal to every kind of adventurous spirit, whether you’re a local or just visiting. Of course for the REALLY adventurous, you can always head out for a dive with some Great White sharks…
Treat dad to a Red Bus and Springbok Experience
Cape Town’s beloved Red Bus, the City Sightseeing bus, is offering a Father’s day special for dads and two kids to explore the Mother City hop-on-hop-off style and visit the Springbok Rugby Museum for only R200. With the upcoming match against France on 24 June, it’s the perfect time to put on your green and gold and visit the interactive Springbok Museum at the V&A Waterfront. The museum is known for making rugby “come alive” through technology-driven exhibits and games giving dads and kids the opportunity to test their rugby skills.
Buy your Father’s Day ticket online at www.citysightseeing.co.za or at our tour offices at the V&A Waterfront or 81 Long Street.
Spot the Big Five
If your dad feels more comfortable on dry land, why not treat him to a big five safari? There are numerous game reserves only a couple of hours’ drive from the city centre that feature Africa’s majestic big five, our favourite being Aquila Private Game Reserve. These reserves offer game drives, bush walks and other activities related to exploring Africa’s wildlife. Most reserves are open for day visitors or have accommodation available for those who want to make a weekend out of it.
Snap-happy treasure hunt
Speaking of nature, Cape Town is a photographer’s dream. If your dad is a keen photographer, make a special day out of it and take him on a photo treasure hunt to some of the best postcard-perfect spots around Cape Town, including Blouberg Strand, Lion’s Head, Groot Constantia and Bo-Kaap. Remember to snap a couple of dad selfies!
