There is no better way to discover a city than by walking its streets, uncovering its history and mingling with the locals. Cape Town has a number of FREE walking tours to do exactly that.
What You Need To Know
Yes seriously! You can get a walking tour for free – and it’s totally worth it. Tours take under two hours (90 minutes to be exact) and are led by passionate volunteers who don’t get paid but are very open to being tipped.
They happen 365 days a year and you don’t need to book – just rock up in Green Market Square on the corner of Shortmarket Street – in front of the Tourist Information office – at the allocated times and you’ll see a big green sign and someone holding a green umbrella, with FREE Walking Tours on it.
The guides are very knowledgeable, polite and politically correct – which makes for an authentic experience that will leave you feeling a greater connection to the Mother City.
District Six Tour
This fascinating tour takes you through the heart of the city, past Adderley Street and the old bank buildings, over Buitenkant Street and into District Six. Although there is nothing much left to see, you get a sense of the dissolution of this once thriving suburb – and are in for a real history lesson. The main attractions include graffiti by Faith47, the District Six Café and St Mark’s Church. You can also visit the District Six Museum on the way back.
When: daily at 11am and 2pm.
Historic Cape Town
Get all the inside information on the history of the Cape of Good Hope on this tour, which usually stops at St Georges Cathedral, Parliament and the President’s House, The Castle of Good Hope, The Slave Lodge and the Company’s Garden.
When: daily at 11am and 4.20pm.
This walk passes Bree Street, Loop Street and Chiapinni Street en route to Bo Kaap, where you can see the colourful houses, smell the spices of the East and hear mosques calling for prayer. Highlights on the tour include the oldest Mosque Auwal Masjeed, The old Tailors House, Biesmiellah Cape Malay Restaurant and The Atlas Spice Trading Centre.
When: Daily at 2pm and 4.20pm
