With numerous of public holidays and long weekends throughout April, there are lots of events for the fit and the foodies in and around the Mother City. Here’s a look at some of the biggest and most exciting events coming up this month.

Freedom Swim

When: Saturday, 8 April 2017

On Saturday, 8 April a bunch of brave swimmers will take to the icy water of the Atlantic for the annual Freedom Swim between Robben Island and Big Bay, Blouberg. Every year around 200 solo swimmers, along with relay teams of 4 swimmers each, make the 7.5km crossing in water with temperatures around 13 degrees to commemorate the birth of South Africa’s Democracy on 27 April 1994. The proceeds from entry fees go towards the SEAL Open Water Swimming Development Trust, and Friends of Vista Nova.

Whisky Live Celebration

When: Thursday, 6 April 2017 – Saturday, 8 April 2017

If a dip in the cold ocean isn’t your thing, head on over to The Lookout in Granger Bay for a sip of the good stuff at the Whiskey Live Celebration. With over 150 of the finest whiskies waiting to be sipped, swirled, and discovered, the event caters for everyone from whisky newbies to seasoned connoisseurs. Experts are on hand to give insight into the history and complexities of each whisky, and how to tune your palate and find your favourite. Tickets to the event include 15 tastings, a bottle of water, as well as a South African Whisky handbook. Needless to say, the event is for over 18s only.

Two Oceans Ultra & Half Marathon

When: Friday, 14 April 2017 – Saturday, 15 April 2017

The annual Old Mutual Two Oceans marathon is known as ‘the world’s most beautiful marathon’, and deservedly so. Every year 11,000 runners tackle the breath-taking 56km Ultra route that takes them from leafy Newlands to surf-crazy Muizenberg, along the False Bay coast to Fish Hoek, over Chapman’s Peak and its spectacular views into Hout Bay, over forested Constantia Neck, and finally finishing at UCT. The Two Oceans Half Marathon is the biggest half marathon in the country, with a sold-out field of 16,000 runners joining in the fun. Held annually over the Easter weekend, the event also includes a trail run, as well as a number of fun runs that cater for families and new runners of all ages.

Parklife Festival 

When: Sunday 16 April 5, 2017

Kick back and relax on the lawns of Green Point Cricket Grounds whilst enjoying a fantastic line-up of local musicians, and sampling gourmet food from the various delicious stalls. Popular bands performing include Jeremy Loops, Matthew Mole, Francois van Coke and many more.

South African Cheese Festival

When: Friday, 28 April 2017 – Sunday, 30 April 2017

If there’s one thing Cape Town foodies love more than wine, it’s the cheese that goes with it, and the South African Cheese Festival brings the brie once again at this tasty annual event. Held at Sandringham Farm near Stellenbosch, the festival brings together cheese lovers and master cheesemakers from around the world in a celebration of all things cheese. The festival also includes a selection of culinary delights, from olives to mushrooms, honeys, jams and preserves. A number of top celebrity chefs will also show you a thing or two to turn that toasted cheese sarmie into a work of gastronomic art. Of course no cheese is complete without a splash of wine to wash it down, and there are several fine wines on offer to taste and enjoy. Live entertainment and other fun, family activities make for a great day out.
