Cape Town Pride
Cape Town Pride is one of the most vibrant and exciting events on the Cape Town calendar. There are parades, parties, competitions, art, poetry, kareoke, book readings, and even a fun run. It’s also an important social movement for the LGBT+ community in Cape Town.

What to expect
Pride aims to raise awareness of LGBT+ issues. As an event, it campaign for the freedoms that will allow them to live their lives on a genuinely equal footing. It’s a celebration of people of every race and faith, whether disabled or able-bodied, and all sexualities and genders including lesbian, gay, bisexual, asexual, queer, questioning, intersex, trans, genderqueer, gender variant or non-binary as well as straight and cis allies. It’s about visibility, acceptance, and awareness.
The parade, which takes place at the end of the week every year, is a colourful menagerie of creativity: there are exotic costumes and grand floats, songs, dancers, and a diverse and joyful energy that really takes over the Mother City.

When is Cape Town Pride?
Cape Town Pride takes place in late summer every year. The 2019 event takes place between 22 February and 3 March.
LGBT+ in South Africa
South Africa decriminalised homosexuality in 1994, at the dawn of our new democracy. Our constitution is heralded the world over for it’s inclusive and liberal principles. Same-sex marriage has also been legal for over a decade. South Africans are proud of how far we’ve come, and Pride is committed to further recognition, awareness, and true equality for our LGBT+ community.
Some of the events associated with Pride are free to attend, and others require tickets. Tickets go on sale on Quicket after the annual dates are announced. Keep an eye on the Cape Town Pride website for announcements.
