The gin-lover's guide to Cape Town

Cape Town’s gin scene has really taken off in recent years. The indigenous botanicals used in some of the locals gins make them beautifully unique, and a bottle of Cape Town gin is the perfect gift for friends and family back home. Whether you like it with tonic, on the rocks, or as part of an elabourate and exotic cocktail, you’re bound to find your perfect gin in the Mother City. Here are our five favourite best gin experiences on offer in the city.

Take a gin-tour with Kiff Kombi

Kiff Kombi offers a full afternoon gin jol (party). It makes for a fantastic outing with friends, and includes visits and tastings at three distilleries, a gin and food pairing, and a drink at the Secret Gin Bar. They’ll also pick you up in the funky, colourful minibus, and provide snacks along the way. It’s a great way to meet people and explore Cape Town and its stunning surrounds.

Visit the Gin lab at Twelve Apostles

The Twelve Apostles Hotel has several gin experiences on offer at their Gin Lab @ The Conservatory, which is open daily from 11am. They have many local and international gins on offer. The daily gin tasting offers three local gins paired with three different tonics, offering a diverse range of botanicals and flavour profiles. The Gin & Canape Tasting experience pairs G&Ts with gourmet treats designed by Chef Nicholas Goldschmidt. The Gin Making Experience takes place at 5pm on Fridays. Join the fun-filled evening where professional mixologists guide you through the process of infusing your own gin with foraged botanicals. Craft beer pairings are available too.

Explore the Gin Route

The Cape Town Gin Route launched in mid-2018, and there are more exciting developments to come. It currently features six distilleries over six kilometres, with over 20 local gins available to try. The Gin Route is self-guided. There are maps and info on the website to help you navigate the route, but you can explore it completely at your own pace. They’re soon launching a guided version of the route, so keep an eye on their website!

Sip cocktails at the secret gin bar

The Secret Gin Bar is tucked away behind Honest Chocolate on Wale Street. There are no signposts, so you have to know where you’re going: through the chocolate shop and out the back to the quaint Mediterranean-style courtyard. The bar is like an old apothecary, with glass jars filled with herbs and potions. They offer elixirs to cure all manner of ills of the head, heart, and soul—as well as classic drinks.
