Wednesday, 03 May 2017 saw the grand finale round of Cape Town Upstaged: Battle of the Bands hosted by Nomad Bistro & Bar. Over a period of five weeks, bands and musicians battled to showcase their talents in Pop, Rock, Jazz and Reggae for the winning title and the grand prize of an online distribution of their single by California based, Soul Group amongst other fantastic prizes.
The Boxer The Ring, Rob Shaw, was the only winner from week one making it into the finale, using strong guitar rhythms and melodic picking to tell a story.
The finale was judged by the industry’s finest who’s who. Heinz Cruys, industry veteran; Peter Weisz, Director of A Major Events; Shane McNear, Co-founder of Cape Town Upstaged; and Mohit Sureka, Owner of Nomad Bistro & Bar. Brother Brother, a Cape Town based band, showed off their latest single and were joined by their fellow week two winners, Volition. One of week three’s winner, The Real Jazz Quintet added a Latin and Jazz infusion to the finale, featuring the stunning vocals of Anathi Mobo. Week four proved to be a highly talented week of the competition, with three of the eight bands making it into the finale: The Lasting, The Guy is Alive and Coriander Colin.
It was week three’s winners, Crosscurrent, who stole the show and took the title and the grand prize. Cape Town based, Crosscurrent are an Indie/Folk band. Milo Hills Williams slammed the group into the number one spot on the drums while Owen Franke and Paul Botes played the keys and trumpet and lead guitar with David Franke singing the group to the number one spot. “We saw an opportunity to compare ourselves to other up-and-coming local bands in a competitive environment,” says Paul. “We knew it would force us to be creative and improve our sound and better ourselves through the rounds. We are extremely proud to walk away with the title and to have performed against such talented bands.”
