Wine Tours

Get a taste of the good life on a winelands tour of Cape Town and its surrounds, which are internationally renowned for their wine.

Many respected and well-known vineyards are open to the public for tours and tastings. You could enjoy an extended visit to one establishment – sometimes, if you’re lucky, meeting with the winemaker on a private visit – or spend a day popping into a few with a tour group. Certain wine route stops also offer food and wine pairing events that are highlights for foodie enthusiasts.

Cape Town’s wine experience includes the Durbanville, Constantia and Helderberg wine routes.

The Constantia Valley, the oldest wine-growing area in Southern Africa, features superb wine estates, good shopping opportunities, a variety of excellent restaurants and an introduction to tradition and heritage stretching back hundreds of years.

Located at the centre of the Cape Peninsula, the valley stretches up the southeast slopes of the Table Mountain National Park, is close to the Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden, and is a short drive from Cape Town’s city centre.

Since the days of Governor Simon van der Stel in the late 1600s, the Constantia Valley has been famous for its superb wines. Today, a number of South Africa’s finest vineyards can be found in the valley, including Groot Constantia, Buitenverwachting, Constantia Uitsig, Klein Constantia and Steenberg, to mention just a few.

Just 20 minutes from Cape Town, nestling in the Tygerberg Hills, the Durbanville Wine Valley has much to offer. Its rolling vineyards and hospitable atmosphere, cool climate, proximity to the cold Atlantic and the mountains make it a pleasant area to visit.

Nine wineries make up the Durbanville Wine Route, including Altydgedacht, Bloemendal, D’Aria, De Grendel, Diemersdal, Durbanville Hills, Hillcrest, Meerendal and Nitida.

The Helderberg region, close to the town Somerset West, has its own wine route, which incorporates more than 20 estates. Somerset West is the gateway to the Helderberg winelands, and Vergelegen and Morgenster are two notable wineries in the area.

Along the Helderberg Wine Route, you’ll find Avontuur Wine Estate, an award-winning winery situated between Somerset West and Stellenbosch, JP Bredell Wines, renowned for its red and port wines, and Longridge Winery, based on the longest ridge of the Helderberg Mountains, and one of the country’s most established boutique wineries.

Even if you’re taking only taster-sized sips, having a designated official driver on the tour bus will take a weight off your mind. Cape Town Tourism only recommends fully insured, licensed tour operators who take your safety on the roads very seriously.
