We went on the half-day cultural township tour with Ezizwe Travel and Tours and had a truly memorable experience. Thabang was respectful, knowledgeable and took the time to explain the history/impact of apartheid and to answer all of our questions (poor guy, I’m sure he is asked the same questions over and over). In the townships I thank him for helping me to see past the poverty and showing me the diversity of people, circumstances, and entrepreneurial ideas that exist. I like the approach of this tour—it was not voyeuristic and tacky, rather Thabang parked the van and we got out and walked around a bit meeting people, going to people’s homes, and some of the kids were so excited they tagged along holding our hands. I felt welcomed everywhere we went and I think that had to do with the fact that Thabang seemed to know every other person we passed on the street (which also probably made it very safe for us)! We stopped at an indoor market that sold quality handmade crafts—prices btw are much better than in town. The minivan we went in was comfortable, air-conditioned, and supplied with cold bottled water. We went past the scheduled time but still were not rushed along or charged extra. Highly recommend!
