Faizal Gangat is a third-generation South African and is married with two children. After many years in the family business, he obtained his tourist guiding badge in 2001 and worked as an on-board guide for a large tour company in Cape Town.He soon realised that tourism was not benefiting the majority of Capetonians on the Cape Flats, so launched his own business, which takes visitors on several cultural tourism routes in the townships. These include small businesses such as guest houses, restaurants, taverns, craft markets and community centres along the way.Faizal is proficient in both Zulu and Xhosa and serves on a number of advisory committees in the townships. His assistance includes providing advice and tuition to school children, training community tour guides, and mentoring local businesses on marketing and management. He has also been recognised outside the townships, winning several tourism awards, including Tourist Guide of the Year 2003 (Western Cape) and Best Tourist Guide in South Africa 2004. He was also the Western Cape finalist for the Emerging Tourism Entrepreneur of the Year award in 2004.He is the first choice for visitors wanting to experience township culture.
