University of Cape Town Irma Stern Museum
Celebrating one of South Africa’s greatest artists, the Irma Stern Museum is housed in her home and studio. Found in the shady suburb of Rosebank, the collection is made up of her artwork as well as artefacts she picked up on her travels through Africa and Europe.
Many of her prized possessions come from the Congo and Zanzibar, destinations she frequented throughout her life. Her style and subject matter included striking figures, portraits, landscapes, still life and ceramics. Along with regular monthly exhibitions that display pieces by contemporary South African artists, custodians also offer regular tours of the house and its contents to visitors. There are numerous workshops as well as classes for the deaf and blind, conducted by trained art therapists. A gift shop sells books, prints, posters and wrapping paper.
