Southern Suburbs

The Southern Suburbs stretch from the base of the Table Mountain National Park towards False Bay.

One of the most popular attractions is the lush Constantia Valley, which forms part of the one of the most exclusive areas in South Africa. One of the wine estates, Groot Constantia, is the birthplace of the South African wine industry.

Must-do’s when visiting the area are the Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden and Rhodes Memorial. Both are ideal for picnicking, walking and as places of reflection. You can also catch a game of rugby or cricket – depending on the time of year – in Newlands at the side-by- side rugby and cricket grounds, which are right next door to the South African Breweries, the country’s oldest brewery. Tours are available here.

Observatory is where you will find pubs, clubs and restaurants, frequented by many students, thanks to the close proximity of the University of Cape Town. (The suburb is not called Observatory for nothing: the South African Astronomical Observatory was founded there in 1820. It is open to the public every second Saturday evening.)

If it’s nature you’re after, visit the Rondevlei Nature Reserve – home to hippo and more than 200 species of words – or Newlands for a braai (BBQ) or a hike/run along the contour paths.
