SANParks: Addo Elephant National Park

The Addo Elephant Park is the third largest national park in South Africa and the only parkable to claim home to the ‘Big Seven’ – South Africa’s Big Five, along with the Southern Right Whale and Great White Shark which are found off the coast of Algoa Bay.

As if that isn’t enough, the park’s marine protected area is also home to the world’s largest breeding population of Cape gannets, and the second largest breeding population of African penguins.

The Addo Elephant National Park was established in 1931 and at the time, only 11 elephants remained in the area. Through conservation efforts over the years, the park now boasts over 600 elephants, as well as a variety of other wildlife. Every South African – and visitor to South Africa – should try make it to the Addo at least once and with a wide range of accommodation, it’s more affordable than you think. Stay in a tented campsite or luxury cottage, depending on your budget and style.
