So you’ve found the right partner and the right location … the next thing you’ll need is to put the right ring on it, as the song goes. Several diamond and gold outlets cater to couples in Cape Town, but few jewellery stores are as devoted to making romantic dreams come true as Cape Diamonds – diamond dealers and fine jewellers within walking distance of the V&A Waterfront. They create high-quality artisanal jewellery, and specialise in guiding couples in choosing the diamond engagement ring and wedding bands that best symbolise the beginning of their life-long commitment.
As top suppliers of diamonds in South Africa, Cape Diamonds are popular with international tourists wanting a unique diamond-ring shopping experience on their trip. But they extend an equally warm welcome to local, first-time jewellery buyers looking for a non-intimidating introduction to the art of choosing that perfect diamond ring, whether it’s a customised creation or something from the store’s trademarked collections.
“If you can dream it, we can make it,” says master jeweller Joel Graham, the owner of Cape Diamonds. Joel and his team believe nobody should only ever dream about their dream ring, so they keep your budget in mind − without sacrificing on the quality of their service http://www.capediamonds.co.za/joel-graham/ or offering. “Taking that big step to share your life with the person you love really shouldn’t break the bank,” says Joel with a warm smile.
Joel’s easy-going manner and earthy charm belie his expertise. After being raised close to nature in Hogsback, the Eastern Cape town nestled in the Amathole Mountains, Joel earned his degree in jewellery design and manufacture at the Durban University of Technology, and followed this with a five-year stint in the UK. There, he worked beside esteemed goldsmiths − such as Roger Birmingham, Barbara Tipple and David Ward – and further refined his skills at Harrods’ Fine Jewellery Room. Joel has also lectured Stellenbosch University jewellery students, part time, thanks to a sponsorship by Anglo Platinum.
Joel’s knowledge of new and ancient techniques is reflected in what’s offered at Cape Diamonds, which he started in 2008. “We combine traditional hand-made jewellery-making techniques with hi-tech manufacturing equipment, such as 3D print technology,” says Joel, who specialises in working in gold, white gold, platinum and palladium and in setting precious stones.
VISIT THE WORKSHOP
You’ll see this old-meets-new approach if you visit the Art Deco-meets-Steampunk workshop at Victoria Junction, situated between tourism hotspots the V&A Waterfront and vibrant De Waterkant. The consultation area in front features retro wooden desks and chairs, complete with atmospheric green lamps; while the interior architecture surrounding the jewellers at the back, quietly persevering at their craft, has brushed copper inlays and that worn-in vintage feel. It’s like stepping back to a time before things were mechanically mass produced.
“We wanted the studio to be a tranquil space that’s warm and inviting,” Joel says of the look and feel, which is more intimate than intimidating. Clients can sneak a behind-the-scenes look at how jewellery is made, take a selfie with their sparkling work-in-progress, or even join hands to help the jewellers pour the gold for their wedding rings.
As their name suggests, Cape Diamonds boasts one of the largest selections of diamonds and certified stones in South Africa, and they supply many of its fine jewellery shops. Reasonable pricing means clients often end their search for a diamond once they’ve visited the studio for a quote.
When it comes to choosing, Cape Diamonds believes in educating customers to help them make an informed and ethically-sound decision. An engagement ring is, after all, both a financial and emotional investment. The studio’s diamonds are all certified conflict-free and each stone comes with a unique serial number laser-etched onto it, linked to its certificate from the Gemological Institute of America (GIA). Thanks to this GIA certification, buyers can be assured of their diamond’s quality, grade, dimensions, cut and carat.
Couples after something more artisanal than the typical engagement rings you see in the windows of jewellery chain stores would do well to try Cape Diamonds. Their large selection of creative designs include split band, solitaire, side-stone and antique-look styles, as well as trademarked collections, such as their glittering Soul Rings, otherworldly Hallo Collection, and popular Fynbos Collection.
The Fynbos Collection features a range of 20-plus engagement and wedding rings with organic shapes and settings inspired by flowers indigenous to the Cape’s revered floral kingdom. Each ring makes for a uniquely South African keepsake − proudly handmade in Cape Town, complete with an Africa-shaped watermark stamp on the back. There’s the Princess Pincushion, a six-claw setting based on the Pincushion Protea, and the Honey Queen, which resembles the Protea Repens (Honey Protea), among others.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, the elegant Blushing Bride solitaire engagement ring is their bestseller. It resembles the delicate Blushing Bride (Serruria florida) discovered in 1773 in the Franschhoek Mountains, a fynbos flower apparently once used in courting.
But clients needn’t choose from the catalogue. Got an inspirational mood-board, jewellery concept or Instagram picture that’s more YOU? Take it to Cape Diamonds, or email it to them, and their trained staff will guide you through the process of personalising your ring – from drawing up the design with one of the goldsmiths and selecting the right precious metals and stones, to perhaps having a special message engraved on the inner band. Testimonials say couples so enjoy this experience, they go back for their wedding bands or to have matching diamond earrings made for the bride. Cape Diamonds also does ring remodelling and restoration, to make inherited pieces a more appropriate fit, or model, for the current wearer.
So if you’re in Cape Town for a romantic holiday, consider Cape Diamonds for a quality ring to symbolise your true love. While rings typically take two to three weeks to make, they can be persuaded to do a speedier turnaround for romantics who decide to get hitched on a whim.
You also don’t have to be in Cape Town to purchase from their collection or have something customised for you. Cape Diamonds accept designs online, and deliver across South Africa, including Johannesburg, Durban and Port Elizabeth.
